Preface
Bhavan's Gandhi Centre of Science and Human Values has published in Kannada a set of ten books on various aspects of Sanskritlore for the benefit of the young to help them have a feel of our ancient knowledge embedded in numerous texts in Sanskrit. These titles have been written by erudite scholars in the respective fields. The books have been appreciated by the heads of many educational institutions, scholars and students alike. Late Sri Swami Ranganathanandaji, former head of the Ramakrishna Mission had opined that they must be published in all languages of India. This Kannada series was called "Yuvajanarigagi Samskrita Vangmaya" and was dedicated to the fond and sacred memory of Smt. Godadevi Ramkumar, a versatile personality in amateur theatre, literature, Sanskrit and music for which she had dedicated her life. The publication was made possible with the munificent contribution from her husband, the late Sri C.M.Ramkumar.b When the Bhavan's Gandhi Centre wanted to bring-out English editions of those books, Sri C.M.Ramkumar came forward to help us with a further generous donation and that made a few publications possible. The Centre is grateful to Sri Ramkumar and feels sad that he is no more with us when this volume is finding the light of day. Shatavadhani Dr. R.Ganesh, a multilingual scholar, author of the original book "ອບ” says that "...Literary criticism widely known as 'Alamkāraśāstra' is one of the branches of knowledge, I am passionate about. There is nothing wrong to say that it enjoys my first priority having developed taste for it....". He agreed to our proposal that it could be brought out in English translation too and suggested Prof. M.C.Prakash, Professor of English, VVS First Grade College, Basavesvaranagar.

Introduction
A veritable artist is one who can construct an enchanting edifice of aesthetic experience on his perception of life as well as the world with a profound insight, vibrant sympathy and its consideration through emotion and intellect which are vibrant though detached. Poet is a unique artist who expresses his world-realization through the linguistic form. Poetry takes form when the spirit of vision is endowed with the body of narration. The perception of both animate and inanimate energy of the universe is technically called rasa and artha. Its expression is called vakrokti and sabda in the same technical language. Thus when a seer's vision and an enjoyer's expression richly unite in appropriate proportions to look ever fresh and yield inexhaustible joy as well as noble motivation the world of connoisseurs is elated that 'poetry' has sprung from the poet. It rejoices to its content in the divine union of enlightenment and enjoyment. The world of readers which affectionately reciprocates to the poet and his creation assumes the self-evident name of 'sahrdaya. (Appreciative imagination that runs parallel to creative imagination. On the whole, the essential objective of poetics is the holistic comprehension of the three principles - the poet who captures the precious experience in beautiful words with self-effacing disinterestedness, the poetry which is his brain child and the like-minded connoisseur who rejoices in poetry. It is but natural that the most significant objective of poetics is an elaborate exposition of the inner meaning of poetry which is a link between the poet and the like-minded reader (sahrdaya) and for which these two exist and are required. The poet and the sahrdaya are but incidental here. The rivulet of poetry emerges from the poet and its outflow is into the ocean of sahrdaya. Our immediate object is the analysis and examination of the rivulet and poetics is the science that studies the entire structure of poetry that sprawls like an ocean between the two ends - the poet and the reader.
