What do Sri Aurobindo and the Mother have to do with animals?
If only we got a puppy each time we got asked that question!
We have always given the same answer:
What is it that doesn't have something to do with Sri Aurobindo and the Mother?
After all, everything is a creation of the Divine - how then can we assume that there are certain things which fall within the scope of being sacred while others miss the boat? It's impossible and the sooner we wrench ourselves out of this limited outlook and understanding of the world around us, the sooner we take the first step towards Oneness with the Universe - a step without which none of our other efforts towards spiritual growth can see fruition. We have to stop drawing lines separating us from anything else that exists for as Sri Aurobindo has said: "The self then of every man, every animal and every object, whether animate or inanimate, is God..."
There may be a lot of gems which have escaped our attention while compiling this wonderful collection of words and anecdotes of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother on animals and we hope that others will continue to add to it in the years to come. For the time being, our attempt is to broaden the horizon of our world and vision and allow for a softening of the heart towards all creatures great and small, who have their own purpose and place in making this world what it is. Nothing is redundant or meaningless or superfluous, except perhaps, our attitude which denies this.
