Professor Amar Singh. This volume stands as a humble yet heartfelt tribute to his lifelong dedication to archaeology, his remarkable academic journey, and his profound influence on students colleagues, and the broader scholarly community.
I had the privilege of meeting Prod. Amar Singh during the archaeological excavations at Farmuna in 2006, a moment that marked the beginning of a collegial and familial relationship that deepened over the years. His keen interest in the protohistoric archaeology of Haryana and his thoughtful engagement In several discussions always left a lasting impression on me. His several visits to the excavation site Farmana, often filled with lively dialogue and insightful reflections, were invaluable to our work. These interactions gave me the opportunity to witness first-hand his unwavering commitment to the field of archaeology and his enthusiasm for new discoveries.
Prof. Singh's contribution to the field of Indian archaeology, especially in the context of Haryana, is both pioneering and enduring. From his earliest academic pursuits, culminating in his doctoral research on the archaeology of Karnal and Jind districts, to his systematic surveys that led to the discovery of over 200 archaeological sites in different districts of Haryana. His work has opened new dimension in the understanding of Harappan civilization, ceramic typologies, and settlement patterns. His several publications, excavation reports, and exploratory studies have significantly shaped the regional archaeological narrative.
An exceptional educator and administrator, Prof. Singh served Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak for over 26 years and later brought his vast experience to the Department of History and Archaeology, Central University of Haryana, as an Academic Consultant. In these capacities, he inspired generations of students, many of whom have pursued their own careers in academia and archaeology and heritage management. His academic guidance, genuine kindness, and encouragement have left an immense impact on all who have had the fortune of learning from him.
His stature extends beyond the classroom and excavation sites. Prof. Singh has actively contributed to national academic institutions including the UGC, UPSC, and NTA, and has delivered numerus keynote addresses and lectures across the country: Notably, his pursuits were not confined to the academic alone his achievements in athletics reflect a dynamic and multifaceted personality.
The present volume brings together 26 research papers covering a wide spectrum of Indian archaeology from Palaeolithic to Historical periods, architecture to ethno-archaeology reflecting both the diversity of Indian archaeological thought and the scholarly respect Prof. Singh commands across generations.
In the 1960s, Professors LIV. Singh and Suraj Bhan were part of the first generation to initiate systematic archaeological research in the region of Haryana. In 1976, Prof. Amar Singh joined the Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology at Kurukshetra University as a Ph.D. scholar under the supervision of Prof. UV. Singh. He participated in the excavations at Daulatpur-1977-78) ad Balu (1979-80 to 1985-86) Prof. Amar Singh completed his doctoral degree on the topic "Archaeology of Karnal and Jind Districts, Haryana" in 1981. Since then, he has conducted numerous explorations and excavations, making significant contributions to the field of archaeology in Haryana. Additionally, he has consistently encouraged many scholars in their academic endeavors. His passion for archaeology continues to inspire those around him, as he often shares his knowledge and experiences with young enthusiasts. With a wealth of wisdom gained over the years, he remains dedicated to nurturing the next generation of archaeologists, ensuring that India's rich heritage is preserved and celebrated. His commitment to education and mentorship has sparked interest in the field among numerous students. fostering a deep sense of curiosity and appreciation for the past. As he embarks on new projects, his vision for the future of Indian archaeology shines brightly, promising exciting discoveries and a deeper understanding of the nation's historical heritage.
Since the beginning of my archaeological studies, Prof. Amar Singh has played an important role in my academic journey. He first introduced me to the techniques of field archaeology during my Master's degree (2004-06) at M.D. University, Rohtak. In 2005, he also organized our first archaeological visit to the sites of Madina, Meham, Chang, Mitathal, Tigrana, and Naurangabad. It was through his efforts that we were able to participate in the Bhirrana excavation in 2006. He constantly encouraged me to pursue admission to the Institute of Archaeology at the Archaeological Survey of India. He also served as a co-supervisor for my doctoral studies. I had the opportunity to work with him at various sites, including Manheru, Badli, Meham, Lohat, and Tigrana, which helped me develop a strong foundation in field archaeology. Additionally, he supported me in understanding the administrative processes at the Department of History and Archaeology, Central University of Haryana. Due to his cooperative nature, hard work, and dedication to archaeology, we have decided to publish a felicitation volume, Amar Smriti: Archaeology and Heritage, as a token of love and respect.
The present volume is a compilation of 26 research papers on various aspects of Indian archaeology. including Acheulian culture, Neolithic culture, rock-cut caves, the Harappan civilization, architecture, historical archaeology, and recent explorations, among others. I hope this volume will be beneficial to all researchers working in the field of Indian archaeology. First and foremost, I acknowledge all the authors of this volume for their scholarly contributions. Without their help, I would not have been able to complete this felicitation volume.
