About The Book

Bengali Short Stories of Golden Era is a collection of 12 short stories translated from Bengali to English. The stories are selected from the early stage of Bengali Short Story writing like that of Troilokyanath Mukhopadhyaya (1847-1919) to modern 20th century writers like Manik Bandyopadhyaya (1909-1956), Subodh Ghosh (1909-1980) etc. and are arranged chronologically so that a single reading of the stories can help the readers to have an idea about the evolution and development of Bengali Short Story as a genre.

Foreword

Love for listening stories is a primitive habit of Man and in course of time the tradition of telling stories has been converted into writing and reading. But sometimes it so happens that due to the barrier of language one cannot enjoy the literary creations of a particular language. Herein lies the need for translation. Many of the classics of World Literature would never have been read and appreciated unless they were translated into other languages. It is often said that translation-literature is inferior literature. But the desire for translation comes in the mind of a translator when he or she feels the urge of sharing with others the pleasure of reading a particular literary work. In order to translate the work the translator also has to undergo the painful process of creation, and any creation is a translation translation of emotions and feelings into language. But for a translator the act becomes more difficult because he or she does not have the opportunity of using the flair, the ease and the nuances of the Primary Language.

This book is one such attempt by the translator to share the pleasures of reading Bengali Short Stories with those who are deprived of having the opportunity of reading them in Bengali. Here twelve short stories are arranged chronologically according to the time-span of the authors showing the growth and evolution of Bengali Short Stories, as well as reflecting the beliefs, customs, tradition, culture and social condition of contemporary Bengal.

The translator's efforts will be rewarded if the translated stories can satisfy the readers.
