Book Description
Foreword

I am glad to find that the Bibliography on Lord Jagannath is ready for publication by our University. This is our fourth publication, and the third one concer- ning Lord Jagannath. This work by Dr. Dash and Dr. Mishra which was undertaken as a Research Project of our University is now available for the use of Research scholars. It is true that earlier Orissa Bibliography which was prepared by Dr. H. Kulke and others contains references to Lord Jagannath but very naturally it was not expected to be nor was it exhaustive in respect of Lord Jagannath. Here is a maiden attempt at making the Bibliography on Lord Jagannath as exhaustive as possible, although it is to be admitted that certain materials from 19th Century publications like Utkala Dipika etc. and certain unpublished materials of importance have not been included in this volume. In any case, literature on Lord Jagannath in one sense is as inexhaustible as the nature and qualities of the Lord Himself "Udadheriva ratnani tejamsiva vivasvatah, Stutibhyo vyatiricyante durani caritani te", as has been appropriately stated in Raghuvamsam or "Likhati yadi grihitva Sarada sarvakalam, tadapi tava gunanamisa param na yati" as the Mahimna is vocipherous about the inexhausti- bility in such contexts. Although in this sense the Lord's ..ature and qualities are inexhaustible and so also is the litera- ture on the Lord, in another sense it is our sacred duty to make the Bibliography as exhaustive as possible for the research scholars. So the only way out is to incorporate in a subsequent volume all those important materials which have been left out in this volume. I hope, the learned compilers of this volume would keep this in their mind & do the needful in a subsequent volume to make it exhaustive atleast in a working sense which alone is what can be done in this context. Again and again, of course, the Bibliography would have to be revised and updated as the literature on Lord Jagannath goes on increasing with the passage of time As such, the present work that has been done by our learned compilers is no doubt commendable.

Introduction

Some time back Sri Jagannath Sanskrit Vishvavidyalaya, Puri formed a Board of Editors consisting of Prof. G. N. Dash and Dr. P. C. Mishra of Berhampur University for the compila- tion of a biblicgraphy of published literature, scholarly as well as creative on Lord Jagannath and related matters. Though an earlier attempt in this direction had already been done in a section of Orissa Bibliography (1981) by H. Kulke, G. N. Dash, M. N. Das and K. S. Behera, the scope of the same was. quite naturally, restricted. Therefore at the very outset it was decided to make this proposed Bibliography on Lord Jagannath as exhaustive as possible even enlarging its scope to include the creative literature side by side with the scholarly literature on Lord Jagannath published till the end of 1990.

To cut a long story short after an appreciable begining and much progress has been made a decision had to be taken to publish whatever had been done till that point of time leaving the rest to be done in the future and published later in separate volume (s). Accordingly the entries had to be numbered and the manuscript had to be made ready for the press immediately. Therefore the present volume, though includes a large number of material, can not be considered to have been completed. It is hoped that the work will continue and will be completed in near future.

It may be mentioned here that Prof. G. N. Dash, as Chair- man of the Editorial Board was in charge of general supervision and guidance and the actual work has been executed by Dr. P. C. Mishra assisted by research assistants working under him.

We are grateful to the authorities of Shri Jagannath Sanskrit Vishvavidyalaya, Puri, especially Major B. K. Mohanty, the former Vice-Chancellor and Prof. G. C. Nayak, the present Vice-Chancellor who have given us the opportunity to compile this Bibliography and taken very keen and personal interest in the project and made available the recessary funds for the same.
