Book Description
Foreword

No one can deny the fact that treasure of Ayurveda lies in Samhitas. Samhita, as name itself suggests, every knowledge is dealt with clearly, both in detailed and in nutshell. Those who want to have a sound knowledge of Shaastra must read and understand Samhitas. Unless and until one doesn't have mastery over Samhitas, he/she cannot understand Ayurveda properly. So, for the sake of giving perfect knowledge, commentaries were written by the scholars since ancient time period. As the centuries rolled on, understanding of Samhitas became more laborious for the learners. Translation of the same started in various languages as per the need of the reader.

This book written by Dr. Vidyanand Mohan is one such effort. The author, a hard working Ayurveda scholar having good knowledge of Samhita, is working on this for many years. With great effort, he has accomplished this work. The book is written as per the current syllabus for BAMS. The author has done a good job by giving sentence by sentence meaning in a simple language and with common terminologies. Samskrita terminologies are kept in Devanagari Lipi itself to see that there is no much deviation from the originality of Samhita. This will also help the students to read Ayurveda terms easily and meaning can be understood in a better way.

The book would definitely be of more help for the student community as this is as per new syllabus. Hope this book would be liked and accepted by knowledge seekers of Ayurveda too. I wish the author a great success and wish more and more such works should come out for the benefit of Ayurveda.

Preface

The book entitled- A CONCISE TEXT BOOK OF SAMHITA ADHYAYAN-1" based on current Course Curriculum prescribed by National Corumission For Indian System of Medicine (N.CLS.M.), New Delhi for Ist Professional B.A.M.S. students. Samhita Adhyayan interds on the "Study of Ayurveda Classical Text' and the subject Samhita Adhyayan-1 included in Ist Professional B.A.M.S. comprises of first 15 chapters of Ashtanga Hridaya Sootrasthana and first 12 chapters of Charaka Samhita Sootrasthana, N.C.LS.M. has meticulously selected the chapters from Sootrasthana of both Ashtanga Hridaya and Charaka Samhita which enables the beginners of Ayurveda to understand fundamentals of Ayurveda. In this book, we have imbibed the opinions of Acharya Arunadatta's Sarvangasandara and Acharya Hermadri's Ayurvedarnsayana commentaries for chapters of Ashtanga Hridaya and Acharya Chakrapani's Ayurveda Deepika commentary for chapters of Charaka Sanhita. We firmly trust our translation and interpretations as the entire work was built up on this unshakeable authenticity of commentaries.

We have not made an attempt to bring out a verse translation book as plethora of works is already available in public domain. The intention behind this concise text book is to focus more on the topics from a students' perspective. Most of the times, students are in the dilemma of how to complete the topics prior to University examinations. Some of them are confused with the superfluous information available in textbooks and some others just go through brief textbooks where information remains insufficient to clear the examinations. After being inspired by interacting personally with most of our students, we were able to envisage this literature work which would enable the students to authentically learn fundamentals of Ayurveda with ease. Suggestions and feedbacks from them helped us to outline this textbook according to their (student community's) expectations. We hope this work would definitely helpful for students of 1st Professional B.A.M.S across our nation. Additionally Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ's) were added for each chapter except those chapters in which MCQ's are not intended as per course curriculum.
