This study 'The Contribution of Melputtur Narayana Bhattatiri to Sanskrit Literature with special reference to Vyakarana' is done by working as a Senior Fellow in the International School of Dravidian Linguistics (ISDL) for a period of two years. The Sanskrit studies in Kerala are deep rooted. The Sanskrit language and literature were part and parcel of the traditional educational system of Kerala. This provided many scholars to become proficient in Sanskrit which resulted in valuable contributions from Keralites to Sanskrit. Melputtur Narayana Bhattatiri is considered to be the foremost among such people. For any meaningful study on the social, cultural, religious and literary history of Kerala, it is essential to have a deep study on the Sanskrit works of Keralites.
Late Prof. V.I. Subramoniam asked me to join as a Senior Fellow in the ISDL to do work on the grammatical works of Narayana Bhattatiri and to prepare an axhaustive index of Prakriyasarvasva. Thus after my retirement as Professor & Director of Oriental Research Institute & Manuscripts Library, University of Kerala, I joined the ISDL to pursue research on the topic mentioned and this work is its resultant.
The present work is divided into two parts. The first part consists of four chapters, an Appendix and Bibliography. The First Chapter deals with the Sanskrit grammatical tradition An Overview. Chapter II deals with the Contribution of Kerala to Sanskrit grammar. Third chapter is the Contribution of Narayana Bhattatiri to Sansrit litera-ture. Chapter four is a discussion on the three grammaticl works of Narayana Bhattatiri i.e., Prakriyasarvasva, Dhatukavya and Apaniniyapramanata. The next one is an Appendix of Bhoja sutras noticed in Prakriyasarvasva. The last section of Part I is Bibliography. The Indices of Prakriyasarvasva are given in part II. This part is divided into five sections. Section I is concerning the sutras in Prakriyasarvasva and Section II is on the Varttikas. Section III is an index on Nyayakhanda and Section IV is on Dhatukhanda. Last section is a Word Index to Prakriyasarvasva.

Unni, Former Vice-Chancellor of Sree Sankaracarya University of Sanskrit, Kalady was kind enough to help me by giving proper suggestions and his valuable work Prabandhamanjari was also of immense help while dealing with the Prabhandhas of Melputtur Narayana Bhattatiri. Prof. V. Syamala, Retd. Professor of English, University of Kerala has taken much pain to go through the entire work and has made corrections wherever necessary. I am very much indebted to her for this invaluable help and kind gesture.

The monograph entitled 'The Contribution of Melputtur Narayana Bhattathiri to Sanskrit Literature with special reference to Vyakarana' is the study of Prof. P. Visalakshy as a senior fellow in the International School of Dravidian Linguistics. Melputtur Narayana Bhattathiri was a great scholar in Sanskrit. His contribution to Sanskrit literature is really worth studying and through which scholars in India and abroad can get a clear understanding of this great savant of Kerala. This work of Prof. Visalakshy is the result of an in-depth study and its presentation is systematic. The index part of this work gives additional advantage to both researchers and scholars in the field of Sanskrit grammar. I am happy to present this publication before the scholarly world.
