Book Description
About The Book

That sickened me and opened my eyes to what ordinary uninhibited hunting and shooting meant. I resolved from that time that I would use my jungle lore for a different kind of shooting, and in that way I began to take photographs of wild animals and jungle life. It requires much more of my skill and gives me an even greater thrill to get good pictures of my animals than when I used to hunt just to kill.'

"It is asserted that in recent years tigers have increased. With this assertion I do not agree. It is a fact that more cattle are being killed every year; this is not due to tigers having increased but due to the balance in nature having been disturbed by the unrestricted slaughter of game, and also to some extent to tigers having been driven out of their natural haunts where they were seldom or never seen by man, by the activities of the Forest Department. A country's fauna is a sacred trust, and I appeal to you not to betray your trust. Shooting over water, shooting over salt licks, natural and artificial, shooting birds in the close season and when roosting at night, encouraging permit-holders to shoot hinds, fencing off large areas of forest and the extermination by the Forest Department of all game within these areas, making unnecessary motor tracks through the forest and shooting down from motor cars, the absence of sanctuaries and the burning of forests by the Forest Department and by villagers at a time when the forests are full of young life are all combining to one end-the extermination of our fauna. If we do not bestir ourselves now, it will be to our discredit and under our very eyes, while we looked on and never raised a finger to prevent it."

Foreword

"A country's fauna is a sacred trust and I appeal to you not to betray this trust. If we do not bestir ourselves now, it will be our discredit that the fauna of our province was exterminated in our generation and our very eyes, while we looked on and never raised a finger to prevent it" - Jim Corbett.

"Corbett National Park & Tiger Reserve" is an authoritative and well researched portrait of a National Park which is a model for wildlife reserves in India. What makes the book unique is that it not only focuses on aspects of the Park such as being the launch pad for Project Tiger, its 600 species of birds and rich fauna and flora, but also touches on concerns which are extremely relevant today such as wildlife conservation, ecosystem management, ecotourism etc. The book also provides an extensive database on the Park with rare photographs.

We are almost at the end now. 70% of all mammal species and 50% of all birds are endangered. One species disappear from the face of year every few weeks. The handful that are alive and exist outside zoos are continuously threatened by a shrinking habitat and the sounds of aggression of human world. Fifty years from now, all that will be left are books such as these that will remind the people of what we had and what we have so wantonly destroyed.
