The present volume had originally been a thesis entitled "A study of the Life and Culture of the People of Northern India: C. 200 B. C. to C. 320 A. D."; sumbitted in 1991 for the Ph. D. degree of Jadavpur University, Calcutta. It is chiefly due to the encouraging reports of my examiners, Dr. Debala Mitra, Ex-Director General, Archaeological Survey of India, and Dr. Siva G. Bajpai, Dept. of History, California State University, U. S. A., that I started to think of its publication. An attempt has been made here at exploring certain aspects of a specified area of ancient Indian civilisation during a specified span of time. The thesis and the bibliography has been thoroughly revised and updated.
1 welcome this very moment for providing me with the opportunity to express my gratitude to the persons who helped me to proceed throughout the course of the research-work and the pre-publication process.
I owe deep reverence to my Research Supervisor Dr. S. K. Maity for his scholoarly guidance and continuous encouragement. I am also indebted to Dr. Sukla Das for her very able supervision and incessant inspiration. My gratitude is also due to Dr. Bela Lahiri and all my teachers in the Department of History, Jadavpur University. I must also offer here my respect to Smt. Manju Sen, who not only taught me at the Honours level, but also played a great part in my life.
1 express heartfelt gratefulness to Dr. B. Guha, Principal, Kalna College, and my colleagues there, who cooperated during the period of my study leave.
I should acknowledge my debt to the University Grants Commission for the award of the Short-Term Teacher Fellowship, which came of immense help to me to complete the thesis.
I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the Librarians and Staff members of the Central Library, Jadavpur University, the Library of the Indian Museum, Kolkata, the Library of the Asiatic Society, and the National Library, Kolkata.
Sri Uttam Das helped untiringly during the typing of the final manuscript. Sri Jamini Ganguly and Sri Kaushik Chakraborty rendered valuable jobs during the typing of the thesis and the associated works.
I wish also to thank Dr. P. Sengupta, Ex-Principal, Bangabasi College, Kolkata and my colleagues there. Dr. Debashis Mazumdar must be mentioned particularly for his tireless and perfectionist efforts in preparing the final manuscript for publication.
I would like to seek the opportunity of this occasion to refer my beloved students.
And now, I desire to mention my mother and two younger brothers, but for whom the present work could never come into existence.
