Book Description
Preface
One of the most important sections of an Archaeological Museum is Epigraphy, which deals with history and culture of a civilization. Epigraphy is the study of inscriptions, which literally means any writing engraved on subjects like stone, metal wood and shell etc. Epigraphy provide us wealth of information on various aspects of history. The inscriptions are the main source material for reconstruction of the glorious past. It provide us several important information relating to political, religious, economic and cultural history of the land. The study of Indian inscriptions began more than 200 years ago. Pioneer paleographers like. James Princep, G. Buhller, A. Sterling, Aisac Taylor, Alexandra Cunningham have rendered great service by producing detailed study of Indian Epigraphy. In the long process of the history of writing, it progressed from stage to stage. The history of writing in India goes book to the Indus valley civilization i.e. 2500 B.C. to 1500 B.C. The Indus scripts appears on a large numbers of steatite seals, which are beautifully prepared, but unfortunately the Indus script is yet to be deciphered. So the earliest dateble scripts discovered and deciphered so far in India are the famous edicts of the Mauryan emperor Asoka who engraved his edicts on stone, pillars etc. The language of the Asokan inscriptions are Prakrit, Greek and Aramic. The scripts used are Aramic, Greek, Kharoshthi and Brähmī.

Introduction
Epigraphy constitutes the principal source for the study of ancient and early medieval history of Odisha. During this period large number of inscriptions were found from different parts of Odisha. The inscriptions are noticed mainly on the stones, temple walls and copper plates. At some places along with the inscriptions, sculptural evidences are also noticed. For any inscription, three noted things are essential for the researcher namely the find spot of the inscription, its reading and interpretation. The find spot generally indicates the area of rule of the king or authority and by a proper reading and interpretation, the achievements of the ruler can be assessed. Social, economic and cultural life of a particular age can also be gleaned from the study of the inscription. Sometimes the eras mentioned in the inscription refer to the chronology by which the date of the ruler can be fixed. The inscriptions are more reliable and dependable source of information.
