Book Description
About the Book
Among the records in the custody of the National Archives of India, Regional Office, Bhopal, there exists a unique collection of documents which were originally designated as the "Mutiny Papers". It consists of about 10,000 documents, mainly in Persian but few also in Urdu, dealing with the events of 1857 in the erstwhile Bhopal State and the role of its ruler, Nawwab Sikandar Begam, who was an ally of the East India Company. These documents throw a flood of light on the contemporary events in India in general and in Central India in particular. The present volume is seventh in the series of descriptive lists that the National Archives of India has been bringing out since 1960 with a view to facilitate optimum utilization of this valuable historical resource. It contains details of 1,234 documents from this collection. This work is intended as a veritable research tool that would illumine different lesser-known facets of the 'Great Event' of 1857.

Foreword
It is indeed my pleasure to place before the scholars and the general readers the VII volume in the series of the 'Descriptive list of Mutiny Papers. The collection of the so-called 'Mutiny Papers' in the record holdings of the National Archives of India, Regional Office, Bhopal is an invaluable historical resource. These documents deal exclusively with the event of 1857 in the Bhopal State and the role of Nawwab Sikandar Begam, the then ruler of Bhopal who was an ally of the East India Company. The total collection consists of about ten thousand documents, most of which are in Persian while a few are also in Urdu. Written in cursive style (shikastah), these documents are in the form of letters exchanged between the Wakils of the Nawwab of Bhopal and the British Officials. An important fact that is revealed through this collection is that there was an Office known as Daftar-i Insha which retained every letter received in the Royal Court and maintained copies of all letters issued for permanent preservation. Thus all the receipts in the collection are the originals while all the issues are copies. In this sense the Daftar-i Insha can be compared to a modern Record Room or an archival repository where all records are kept for posterity. The collection included in this volume presents some interesting narratives connected with the Great Uprising of 1857. In the Bhopal state there were officials of the Nawwab who remained loyal to her and were in regular touch with her during this eventful period. Then, there were also officials like Fazil Muhammad Khan, Jagirdar of Garhi Ambapani and his brother Adil Muhammad Khan, who revolted against the Nawwab. Fazil Muhammad Khan was defeated and captured by the Nawwab's forces and was later handed over to the British Officials who condemned him to the gallows. The Company Government thanked the Nawwab as no European was killed or assaulted anywhere in Bhopal State during this uprising.
