दो शब्द ईश्वर ने ग्रहों को मनुष्य के कर्मफलों को प्रदान करने और तदानुसार न्याय करने का अधिकारी बनाया है। न्यायकर्ता नवग्रहों में प्रमुख न्यायाधीश शनि महाराज हैं। ये न सिर्फ न्याय के कारक हैं बल्कि दंड, जेल, अपराध, पाप, रोग, अपमन, शोक, अभाव, दरिद्रता, अवरोध, विलंब, बाधा, दुर्भाग्य, संघर्ष और कठिनाई के भी कारक हैं। जहां एक ओर निर्वासन, पदच्युति, कारावास, वनवास, ऐकाकी हो जाना या परित्यक्त होना, उपेक्षा, अनादर, दीनता, हीनता, उदासी, निराशा, शिथिलता, बुढ़ापा, अकर्मण्यता, अक्षमता, विवशता, कष्ट, पीड़ा, दर्द, व्यथा, जड़ता, नपुंसकता/ठंडापन या अनुत्साह आदि पर शनि का अधिकार है। वहीं दूसरी और शनि महाराज ही संन्यास, वैराग्य, आध्यात्म, अनुसंधान, दूरदर्शिता, सहिष्णुता, तप, विज्ञान तथा मीमांसा के भी कारक हैं। अतः वे नवग्रहों में सबसे अधिक रहस्यमयी तथा विलक्षण हैं। प्रकाश के सबसे बड़े स्रोत सूर्य के पुत्र होते हुए भी ये अंधकार के कारक हैं। छाया के पुत्र तथा यमराज, यमुना और मनु के भाई हैं। भगवान शिव इनके गुरु है। ये शिव और हनुमान को छोड़कर किसी के बस में नहीं आते।
