Book Description
FOREWORD

India is situated at the tri-junction of three zoogeographic realms, Afro-tropical, Indo- Malayan and Paleo-Arctic, harbouring the characteristic faunal elements from each of them. As such the country, with its diverse ecosystems/habitats, is endowed with rich and unique biodiversity. As many as 97514 species of fauna have been realized and recorded from India, and many more are still there to be explored and documented.

Zoological Survey of India, since its inception in 1916, has been dedicated to the service of the Nation by providing information on its rich and diverse fauna by exploring and documenting them. ZS1 has so far surveyed and documented the faunal diversity of 22 States and Union Territories and 57 Protected Areas of the country.

District Dehradun is the capital of Uttarakhand, a state that geologically represents a complete share of the cross section of the Himalayas ranging from the plains to the Trans Himalayan watersheds. The district has rich faunal diversity owing to its unique ecosystem with varied physiographic and climatic conditions. ZSI has already published the Fauna of Uttarakhand, comprising 3748 species, in three volumes in 2010. As part of further monitoring and updating the information on fauna, ZS1 conducted a comprehensive study on the faunal diversity of the district Dehradun. This document is the outcome of that study, carried out by a team of dedicated scientists of Northern Regional Centre of ZSI, Dehradun. The document deals with 63 faunal groups comprising 2473 species, of which 1732 species belongs to invertebrates and 741 to vertebrates. Among these, three are new records from India and 19 are new records from Dehradun district. This is the first faunal document with most updated faunal information of the district Dehradun.

I hope that this published work on the Faunal Diversity of Dehradun District, will be a user-friendly document benefitting not only the researchers, planners and policy makers but also the state forest department, providing the base line data on the fauna of the district for conservation and management plans.
