INTRODUCTION

Himachal Pradesh is a hilly state situated in northwest Himalaya at longitude et 77 01 12" and 7740 East and latitude of 30 22 30 and 3101 20 North and occupies 10.54% area of the Himalayas. It has an extensive network of protected areas comprising of 2 National Parks and 32 Wildlife Sanctuaries encompassing all preventative areas in different physiographic zones. District Sirmour of Himachal Pradesh is located in the outer Himalayas, commonly called as Shiwalik range. It is bounded by district Shimla in North Uttrakhand in East, Haryana in South and district Solan in North-West and possesses three wildlife sanctuaries Le Renuka Wildlife Sanctuary: Churdhar Wildlife Sanctuary and Simbalbara Wildlife Sanctuary Chundhar Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Sirmaur District in the southern part of the state (Temple of Shrigul Devta in Chaupal (Shimla) and top in Sirmour) of Himachal Pradesh and is the highest peak in outer Himalayas.

This is one of the newer Sanctuaries in Himachal Pradesh and also a key conservation area in the Shiwalik hills zone. The Sanctuary comprising an area of 56 square km was established in the year 1955 and was finally notified vide notification number FFW-B-F (6) 28/99 in the year 1999 The Chuardhar wild life sanctuary is situated in Rajgarh tehsil of Sirmour district of Himachal Pradesh. The sanctuary is 53 Km from Solan (Himachal Pradesh) and 93 kms from Kalka on the Solan-Haripundhur mad Churdhar Wildlife Sanctuary derived its name from the Churdhar hill Range that runs along the north-eastern boundary of Sirmour destrict in the North Sewalk Range. The Sanctuary is centered around the Chur Peak and encompass vast swaths of pristine alpine and temperate forests. The Chur peak 0447m) is also the highest peak in the outer Himalayas. It is also known as Charchandni (Bangle of Snow) as it remains snow clad for about six months and offers some of the most picturesque landscapes in this area The Chur Peak is also considered sacred by the local populace because of the Shiv temple there and large numbers of devotees from the neighbouring region visit it.
