In ancient times Bharata was known for its prosperity, be it is in terms of wealth, natural resources or knowledge. Study of history shows us that students and scholars from various part of the world came to Bharata, to study and enhance their knowledge. Various universities in Bharata were efficient to foster their intellectual pursuits and academic excellence in any subject like Veda, Jyotishya, Astronomy, Vyakarana or Ayurveda. All the indigenous Sciences flourished under the state patronage. Later because of various reasons this support was withdrawn, which led to the inertia, resulting in stunted growth, and limited functioning of Ayurveda like other sciences. Ayurveda is still suffering with consequences of these.
There are many fundamental concepts in Ayurveda which need detailed and careful scrutiny to analyze their utility in the field of therapeutics. The concept of Bhaishajya Kaala is one such aspect, study on which is attempted here. Though Bhaishajya Kaala is the classical term for 'time of o administration of medicine', in many contemporary books the term Aushadha sevans kaala has been used.
Time of administration of medicine is one such factor, consideration of which is very essential for the desired effect in the treatment of diseases. Human body is a complex structure, composed of cells, tissues and systems that work together to sustain life. Both human body and universe exhibit same patterns, connections and interdependencies, even though they are in different scale. This concept is known as Loka-Purusha Samyavaada in Ayurveda. Kaala which is one among the Navakarana dravyas, has its tremendous influence on human body, has a key role in the administration of medicine.
In this work detailed description of Bhaishajya kaala has been given. The references present in the Brihatrayee, their commentaries and other classical books were studied keenly, in order to understand various minute deliberations of application of Bhaishajya kaala. As the shlokas are cryptic and sometimes the meanings of shlokas are very complex, to overcome this hurdle the commentaries of Chakrapani, Jejjata, Dalhana, Indu, Arunadatta, and Hemadri etc. were studied critically. The results of this study along with some logical inputs are being presented here. All the Aushadhi sevana kaalas have been described starting from their derivation, definition, tentative mode of action, therapeutic application and some direct references found in Classical texts. They have been analysed for the other possible applications also. Along with these various other concepts, closely related with this, like dominance of Vata in the application of Bhaishajya Kaala or logical reasoning explaining contextuality of Bhaishajya Kaala in samhitas including Brihatrayee and others. In the whole it covers almost everything there is to know about Bhaishajya Kaala.
If the practice of Ayurveda is to be meaningful, fruitful and rational then, fundamental concepts of Ayurveda should be critically evaluated and understood. It is hoped that this book will be helpful in that direction, to the learners of Ayurveda, for post graduate and Ph.D Scholars in their Research activitiesand projects. We will be wholeheartedly indebted to the learned scholars and readers and welcome their valuable suggestions to improve the work.
