SPACE exploration is the use of astronomy and space technology to explore outer space. While the exploration of space is carried out mainly by astronomers with telescopes, its physical exploration though is conducted both by uncrewed robotic space probes and human spaceflight.
Space exploration is investigation, by means of crewed and uncrewed spacecraft, of the reaches of the universe beyond the earth's atmosphere and the use of the information so gained to increase knowledge of the cosmos and benefit humanity. Space exploration, like its classical form astronomy, is one of the main sources for space science.
Space exploration deals with space science and human presence in space, and that is carried out by spaceflights and astronauts. Spaceflight is the use of space technology to achieve the flight of spacecraft into and through outer space. Spaceflight is used for space exploration and also for commercial activities like space tourism and satellite telecommunications. Additional non-commercial uses of spaceflight include space observatories, reconnaissance satellites, and other earth observation satellites.
Exploration of space has been one of the fundamental human instincts. For centuries, man has marvelled at the night sky and has been devising several means to go beyond the earth and reach the universe; it was only in the past two centuries, exciting developments have been taken place in the areas of spaceflight and space exploration. As a result, man could finally be able to go around the earth, land on the moon and send spacecraft to other planets in the solar system and beyond. We have also acquired capabilities to have a clear view of the universe through telescopes orbiting around the earth like the Hubble and Chandra observatories.
Though space exploration began with man's quest for knowledge, the advanced technologies paved the way for the application of space missions and explorations to the development of the society. Today, space-based telecommunication, television broadcasting, meteorology, resources monitoring, etc. have become essential in everyday life. Ostensibly, space exploration has played a key role in our ultra-modern society providing luxury to human life. The fascinating but complex technology of space can be understood only when it is conveyed in a lucid and interesting manner. Everyday, some amazing feats are happening in space science technology and its applications.
In the present treatise, Glimpses of Space Exploration, attempts have been made to enunciate the complexity of space technology in the simplest forms for the easy understanding of common man interested in space. Different aspects of space missions and the technology underlying there have been spread over thirty-six chapters, beginning with a Prelude and ending with an Epilogue. The contributions of women in space travel and exploration have also been discussed. Both advantages and disadvantages of space missions form a part of our discourse. A select Bibliography is given for further reading.
Most of the topics presented here have been published earlier in magazines/journals like Science Horizon, Emerging Science, and Current Development Reporter, and received readers' applaud. I am highly indebted to those editors and the authorities for inspiring me to present all those articles collectively in the form of a book.
I have also drawn some material from the books of renowned authors and publishers. I owe my indebtedness to all of them. Acknowledgements is also due to my revered teachers and loving pupils for their inestimable help and prolonged initiations. It is a pleasure on my part to recognize their assistance.
