Book Description

Preface Odisha, historically known as Udra, Kalinga, and Utkal, is revered as a sacred and virtuous land of eastern India, along the coast of the Bay of Bengal. It has been a cradle of religious and cultural harmony, fostering the growth of Buddhism, Jainism, Shaivism, Shaktism, and Vaishnavism. This rich tradition of Sarva Dharma Samanwaya-the integration of all religions-defines Odisha's spiritual essence. Odisha, or Kalinga, is prominently mentioned in ancient texts like The Mahabharata, The Natya Shastra, and The Vayu Purana. Its recorded history is marked by the epochal Kalinga War of 261 BCE. Though Emperor Ashoka emerged victorious, the unparalleled bravery of the Kalinga warriors profoundly transformed him from Chand Ashoka (the cruel one) to Dharma Ashoka (the virtuous one). Since that time, Odisha has been a beacon of peace and moral values. It has witnessed the reign of illustrious rulers like Kharavela and Kapilendra Deva and boasts a glorious maritime legacy with thriving connections to Southeast Asia. At the heart of Odisha's identity lies Lord Jagannatha, the "Lord of the Universe." He is considered a living deity and the soul of Odia consciousness. From literature and music to dance, painting, rituals, and festivals, the cultural fabric of Odisha revolves around the Lord.
