The book explores the foundations of Hindu music, including its origins in the Vedic tradition and its deep connection to religious rituals and spirituality. It provides insights into the structure of ragas, talas, and the philosophical underpinnings that distinguish Indian music from Western traditions. Tagore also emphasizes the role of music as a medium for devotion and emotional expression.
With contributions from various scholars, this work offers a holistic understanding of Indian music's evolution and its enduring cultural importance. It remains a valuable resource for musicians, historians, and anyone interested in India's artistic heritage.
The whole will consist of two parts: The first part contains extracts from almost all the eminent works on Hindu Music extant in the English language.
It is therefore hoped that the present collection, not-withstanding its short-comings, will be received with indulgence by those interested in the subject. Should this hope be realized, I purpose soon to publish the second part which will contain a dissertation on our ancient Sanskrit musical works and a criticism on the different views taken by the European writers on Hindu Music, together with further collections if available.
