Book Description
ABOUT THE BOOK
The words-science and art, are not used in a uniform way. Sometimes the word art is used in contrast. with nature, whereas the term science is applied to the elaborations of laws of nature. Keeping this interpretation in mind Sarkar suggested that art is conceived as something which is human, but not natural but as a matter of fact the human is also natural.

The author has discussed the various interpretations of religious science and art in this book and has organized all the materials into nine chapters, besides a brief introduction.

Kishore Lal Sarkar made a praise worthy attempt to explain the Hindu religion, both as a science and art as early as in 1910 when religion was considered to be the subject matter of orthodox pandits and classical intelligentsia.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Sarkar brought a revolution in the field of study of religion in India.

FOREWORD
The author, late Kishori Lal Sarkar, was a great Indologist and practiced law at the Calcutta High Court, and wrote this valuable book "The Hindu System of Religious Science and Art," which was published as early as in 1910 from Calcutta. In those days religion was being interpreted by the philosophers or by the orthodox pandits in their own ways to suit their needs, But the publication of this book by K.L. Sarkar brought a revolution in the field of study of religion in India.

Sarkar was of opinion that the religion has an access both in the fields of science and arts. He suggested that "religious science" is somewhat familiar but does not show the expression "religious art". Nevertheless there are things comprehended in religion which may be called art, just as much as there are things in it which may be presented in the shape of science.

The words science and art, are not used in a uniform way. Sometimes the word art is used in contrast with nature, whereas the term science is applied to the elaborations of laws of nature. Keeping this interpretation in mind Sarkar suggested that art is conceived as something which is human, but not natural but as a matter of fact the human is also natural. In this connection it may also be argued that while "science consists in knowing, art consists in doing". I may also add further that art also consists in feeling.

Generally speaking, the knowledge of the truths of the material world is called science while a realization of the truth of the consciousness of man is called art. In spite of these differences science and art are equally the two forms of human culture and as culture forms the central theme of anthropology, the interpretation of religion as a science and art falls within the greater ambit of the science of man.
