Book Description
About the Book and Author
The author of this book Dr. Suresh Dhayagude completed all his education in Pune. An alumnus of the famous Fergusson College he received his B. A. (Hons) with first class in Sanskrit and English in 1958 and M. A. in Sanskrit with first class in 1960; he did M. A. in English in 1962. He did Ph. D. in English from the University of Pune. He was active in academic life throughout his career, first as lecturer and assistant professor of English at S. S. V. P. College, Dhule and then as professor of English at Modern College, Shivajinagar Pune. He also taught at the Dept. of English, Pune University as a visiting faculty. His Ph. D. thesis A Comparative Study of Western and Indian Poetics has been published by the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute, Pune and is acclaimed as a masterpiece of its kind.

Though he was busy with his study of English literature, he never gave up his moorings in Sanskrit studies and ancient Indian Culture and Philosophy. The author is a lifelong student of Hinduism and Abrahamanic religions. He has read very deeply into their scriptures. He is well-versed in Sanskrit and has studied in the original most of the important Hindu scriptures. He is well aware of the fact that the spiritual tradition which originated in the Vedas has developed into a grand continuum which is identified all the world over as modern day Hinduism.

Unlike Abrahamanic faiths, namely, Judaism, Christianity and Islam, Hinduism is not a closed system, stagnant and frozen with a single prophet, a single gospel and a single ever-jealous intolerant God. It is a natural growth from the meditations and philosophical speculations of innumerable vibrant minds who were constantly in search of the Transcendental. It is not averse to questions, however disturbing and full of philosophical implications. It is clearly for this reason that in our modern world of science Hinduism alone can stand high and tall. The basic tenets Abrahamanic faiths have already been disproved by science. This book devotes many of its chapters to the discussion of this subject alone. It throws a valuable comparative light on all these religions by juxtaposing their tenets. No other book has so far done this for reasons not difficult to guess. It is hoped that this book will help both friends and adversaries, followers and critics of Hinduism to understand this great and only philosophical religion better.

Acknowledgements
Heartfelt thanks are due to many friends and well wishers for this work seeing light of day at long last after several obstacles, fits and starts and hiccups. Originally written in Marathi in a much abridged form it evoked a very encouraging response from a wide spectrum of readers. An English version of it was insisted upon by many of my learned friends so that the book could reach curious readers all over the world. A work on Hinduism in a comparative light was a pressing need of the hour and this book could meet the challenge, these friends very strongly felt. Here I must gratefully mention Shri. H. B. Umranikar (Australia), Dr. Nene (Vadodara) Prof. Dhamankar (Nagpur) and Dr. A. P. Dani (Pune) for the encouragement they offered. Dr. A. P. Dani deserves special thanks because he carefully went through the entire typescript and gave valuable suggestions. Shri Y. S. Lele and Shrimati Shraddha Patwe of Jnana Prabodhini took a lot of interest in preparing the typescript.

Smt Shraddha Patwe undertook the responsibility of preparing the D. T. P. typescript and meticulously prepared the text. Special thanks are due to the veteran R.S.S. ideologue Shri. Ranga Hari for his learned and encouraging Foreword.

I wish to sincerely thank the trustees of Bharatiya Vichar Sadhana for having undertaken this publication.

Introduction
Hinduism is the oldest of all the living and widely practised religions of the world. Its followers all the world over are well in the neighbourhood of 1.2 billion (i.e. 120 crore). It is the only philosophical religion and it alone propounds a universal non-sectarian morality for the well-being of humanity and for the spiritual advancement of the individual. It respects and accepts each and every shade and variety of religious beliefs and breathes the very spirit of tolearance. It is truly eclectic since it views every sincere effort of God-realization as valid and legitimate. It is not tied down to a single prophet and a single scripture.

Still, Hinduism is the most misunderstood, most misrepresented and most viciously maligned religion. It is constantly under attack from some well-entrenched forces, both global and indigenous.

Foreword
Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in his auto-birography has observed, "It has been often remarked that Hinduism is hardly a religion in the usual sense of the word. And yet what an amazing tenacity it has got, what a tremendous power of survival. One may even be a professing atheist as the old philosopher Charvaka was - and yet no one dare say he has ceased to be a Hindu. Hinduism clings on to its children despite them." (Chapter 17). In an autobiography the person speaks out his experience. During the Nehruvian era there were many educated in India and England who agreed with Nehru's observation. They believed that Hinduism was not a religion as Christianity or Islam was. Measuring it with the European Christian yardstick of what is true religion, they found it utterly wanting. Yet they were all 'amazed', rather dazed at it's 'tenacity and the tremendous power to survive' despite repeated blitzkriegs against it by missionaries, mullahs, monarchies and Macaulays. A good many of them became professing atheists - the modern Charvakas - and a few others got baptized. To all of them and those who belong to their class, amazed and bewildered, this book Hinduism - A Critical Introduction, authored by Dr. Suresh Dhayagude is an apt answer. What the Belgian scholar Koenaard Elst opined about the enlightening book of Ram Swarup 'Hindu View of Christianity and Islam', with due courtesy I affix to this book -"A self-revelation of Hinduism, ideologically no longer diffident and apologetic."
