Foreword
It gives me immense pleasure to write a foreword for the "Illustrated Caraka Samhita, Cikitsasthana" translated by Dr. R. Vidyanath, M.D. (Ayu); Ph.D., Principal, & Professor and H.O.D., Ayurveda Samhita & Siddhanta, SS. Agrawal Institute of Ayurveda, Navsari, Gujarat As a teacher of Samhita for the last three decades, Dr. Vidyanath has rightly identified the difficulties faced by students in grasping the nuances of the original text without the guidance of a commentary. He recognized the unparalleled value of Cakrapani's Ayurveda Dipika and undertook the monumental task of translating the entire Caraka Samhita along with this crucial commentary. This present volume, the Cikitsasthana, is a significant part of that comprehensive project. The Caraka Samhita is the cornerstone of Ayurvedik medicine, serving as the primary guide for Ayurvedik physicians and students in the management of patients. The Cikitsasthana, comprising 30 chapters, is particularly crucial as it elaborates on the therapeutic principles and practical applications of Ayurveda. It thoughtfully begins with preventive aspects like Rasayana (Rejuvenation) and Vajikarana (Virility) before delving into the management of various diseases. From common ailments like Juara (Fever) to complex conditions like Raktapitta (Bleeding Disorders), Prameha (Urinary Disorders including Diabetes Mellitus), Kuştha (Skin Diseases), Rajayakşma (Tuberculosis), Apasmära (Epilepsy). Unmada (Hysteria), Käsa (Cough), Sudsa (Breathlessness), and Atisära (Diarrhoea), the Cikitsasthäna provides a comprehensive understanding of Ayurvedik treatment. It even addresses neurological and gynaecological problems, showcasing the breadth of its coverage. This translation stands out for several reasons. The inclusion of the original Sanskrit text of the Cakrapani commentary alongside the English translation allows readers to delve deeper into the original intent and meaning. The systematic, sentence-wise translation enhances comprehension, making it accessible to a wider audience. Furthermore, the incorporation of illustrations and tables is a valuable addition, aiding in the retention of complex information, especially for students. The detailed explanations of Nyayás (maxims) in separate text boxes highlight their importance in understanding core concepts.

Preface
The Caraka Samhita is one of the foundational texts of Ayurveda, is believed to be based on the teachings of the sage Agniveśa and later redacted by Caraka. It covers various aspects of health, disease, diagnostics, treatment principles, herbal formulations, and medical ethics. The Caraka Samhita consists of eight Sthänās viz., Sütrasthana, Nidanasthana, Vimänasthana, Särirasthana, Indriyasthäna, Cikitsästhāna, Kalpasthana and Siddhisthäna. Cikitsästhäna is one of the most important sections of the Caraka Samhita, as it deals extensively with the treatment of various diseases. It consists of 30 chapters and provides detailed descriptions of different therapeutic approaches, including: Treatment of specific diseases e.g., fever, digestive disorders, respiratory ailments etc., Detoxification therapies like Pañcakarma, Rasayana (rejuvenation) and Vajikarana (aphrodisiac) therapies, Diet, and lifestyle recommendations for disease management. This section is crucial for Ayurvedik practitioners as it provides a comprehensive guide to healing methods, medicinal formulations, and holistic treatment approaches. Thus, it is quoted as under: निदाने माधव श्रेष्टः सूत्रस्थाने तु वाग्भटः। शारीरे शुश्रुतः श्रेष्टः चरकस्तु चिकित्सिते ॥ This verse succinctly highlights the expertise of the great Acaryas of Ayurveda: Madhavanidana is considered as the foremost authority on disease diagnosis. Vägbhața Samhita is the best in Sütrasthana (fundamental principles and theories), Sušruta Samhita is the best in Sarira (anatomy and physiology), and Caraka Samhita is the best in Cikitsa (treatment of diseases). This verse beautifully encapsulates the contributions of scholars of Ayurveda and their respective areas of excellence. It is with great pleasure and deep sense of fulfilment that I present this translation of the Cikitsasthäna of the Caraka Samhita. This project, undertaken in the year 2018 after my retirement from Government service, has been a journey of dedication and scholarly pursuit. By the grace of God, the blessings of my parents and teachers, and the encouragement of several erudite scholars, I was able to work on this endeavour with unwavering focus, ensuring its completion without any obstacles. Translating the Caraka Samhita with Cakrapāņi's commentary has been a long-cherished dream. With over three decades of teaching experience, I realized that understanding the author's original ideas requires not just a literal translation but also an in-depth study of the commentary. Among the available commentaries, Ayurveda Dipika by Cakrapāņi stands out as the most insightful, leading me to embark on this work post-retirement. Before commencing this work, I sought the blessings of Sri Sri Sri Tridandi Chinna Jeeyar Svámi ji, who offered valuable encouragement and his holy blessings, which I believe played a crucial role In the timely completion of this project. nitially, we thought that the project would be completed in four volumes as mentioned: ol. 1-Sütrasthana, Vol. II- Nidanasthāna, Vimanasthāna, Särirasthana, and Indriyasthāna; ol. III- Cikitsästhāna; and Vol. IV - Kalpasthana and Siddhisthana. However, as the chapters in kitsästhāna are extensive, we revised our plan and divided it into five volumes.
