It is a very happy moment for Indian music to-day. Before independence their was a scarcity of books on Indian Music but things have changed to-day. There are many well known scholars of Indian Music, as well as, brilliant younger generation coming up with their own research works being polished.
Dr. M. Narmadha, my student is another example of such an effort which needs to be congratulated. She has worked very hard on a topic which needs to be understood by all researchers of music. What is more that she has tried to prove her contention by a cassette tape for a practical understanding. Such an effort is an attempt to place the theory of Sancara on a logical basis. She has taken a lot of pain to dwelve in details with the theory of Sanchara.
Dr. Narmadha being an accomplished and talented Violin had the fortune of learning from her father, the famous Violin Virtuoso Pandit M.S. Gopalakrishnan. This aspect of her life gave her to understand the beauty of developing the Raga Bhavas. When she came to learn from me I found that she had already acquired the mastery over the instrument but what has helped her most, was the understanding of both the styles. So we find in her a student having a spiritual and scholastic character who wants to search for more, so that she could bring a harmony in between the Karnatak and Hindustani style. She has tried her best to bring out the essence of these principles of our style and I am positive, her work will certainly be recognised as an effort of a sincere scholar.
Such informative materials were never available earlier in the form of a book and that too with help of a Cassette, because such knowledge was never made available for general public. Narmadha has done it for the benefit of the scholars and made it easily available not only for Indians but for the World also.
