From the information given in the beginning and at the end of the text by the author himself, it is known that the author bhavadeva misra was born in the region of mithila which is now known as North Bihar (India). He was a maithila brahmana and his surname was misra. It seems that he belonged to visnuvrddhi gotra (clan). krsnadeva was the name of his father and the name of his younger brother was baladeva misra, who was also an equally great scholar and had earned a great reputation. When we see bhavadeva referring himself as an elder brother of baladeva misra, he feels proud. bhavadeva had earned the title of mahamahopadhyaya during his time.
bhavadeva's erudition can be judged on the basis of the references he quotes frequently from the sanskrta texts like sruti, smrti, purana, ayurveda, darsana in support of his explanations of the various topics of yoga. In case of the conflicting views, he presents his opinion in prose form in an attempt to reconcile the diverse views. From this we can judge his critical acumen.
Despite being a great scholar, he was unassuming, quiet and devoid of scholarly pride. Whenever he was required to refute the views of others, he has done it modestly.
Yuktabhavadeva is a treatise which is about 400 years old. It has been listed in the KKKK, Catalogue of Yoga Manuscripts and other catalogues. Despite this fact, it has not attracted the attention of scholars, research workers and yoga enthusiasts upto now, as a result of which such an important treatise on yoga remained unknown. Looking to the valuable contents of yoga in this treatise, the Lonavla Yoga Institute (India) considered it desirable to bring it to the notice of yoga community by editing and publishing this text.
The work on this text was started with a single MS in 1999. Gradually we succeeded in obtaining three more MSS. This encouraged us to complete the text.
We find the different conflicting views well-coordinated and synthesized in this text. After studying the contents of the text, we were convinced about its utility and need of its publication for the benefit of the yoga readers.
