Book Description
About the Book
The book "A Manual of the Geology of India" emerged from the 1887 Geological Survey Annual Report's call for a revised edition, spearheaded by Mr. Oldham. Its goal was to consolidate scattered geological data for accessibility. The second edition, organized chronologically, showcased advancements in knowledge but excluded economic geology to maintain focus. Despite ongoing challenges with spelling standardization, partly resolved by referencing the Imperial Gazetteer, acknowledgments were extended to contributors like Prof. Suess and Dr. Blanford. Covering diverse geological topics, from drainage systems to the Himalayas' age and origin, the book provided valuable insights into the geological history of the Indian Peninsula.

About the Author
Richard Dixon Oldham FRS (1858-1936), a British geologist, revolutionized seismology during his tenure at the Geological Survey of India. his 1893 "A Manual of the Geology of India," co-authored with Medlicott and Blanford, remain foundational in geology, shaping the field's understanding of stratigraphical and structural geology through meticulous observation and analysis.

Preface
THE first edition of the Manual of the Geology of India was found to sup-ply a want so much felt that it soon went out of print, and for several years has only been procurable from the dealers in second-hand books. It had, besides, become out of date in many parts, and the Government of India decided that the time had come for the preparation of a new edition. So great have been the strides made in our knowledge of Indian Geology in the last fifteen years that it has been found possible to entirely change the arrangement of the book and to adopt the more scientific and orderly course of describing the rocks in chronological order, instead of breaking the book up into a series of descriptions of separate districts, as was found to be inevitable in the preparation of the first edition. There is not, unfortunately, everywhere the same certainty regarding the proper position in a chronological arrangement of particular groups of beds. Frequently the true homotaxis is unknown, and there is a conspicu-ous instance of the mistakes which may then be made, in certain rocks of the Arakan Yoma, which were supposed to be triassic at the date when this second edition was written, but have been shown to be eocene as the pages were passing through the press, and consequently rocks which should have been classed with the tertiary were described in the chapter devoted to the carboniferous and trias. Many districts have remained untouched since the publication of the first edition, and in all such cases, and wherever indeed no serious modifications of the original text have been necessary, it has been allowed to stand practically as in the original publication. All these passages have been carefully revised and generally more or less condensed, while many minor alterations needful to adapt them to the altered scope and arrangement of the work have been made, as well as such alterations as have been neces-sary on account of the advance of our knowledge. In the table of contents the portions in which the first edition has been taken as the basis of the text are distinguished by a different type from that which refers to the portions which are new or have been entirely re-written.
