Preface
The aim of this investigation was to ascertain the state of indigenous metalcraft in India today, the position of metal artisans, and to prepare a contemporary record of the techniques employed by the artisans. Special attention was paid to the study of metalcraft in brass, bell-metal and bronze. Other metalcraft was only briefly noticed, and iron was excluded.

Intrduction
There are work centres in thousands along the whole length and breadth of India where tens of thousands of artisans are engaged in fa- shioning metal artefacts by traditional indigenous processes. One comes across them everywhere, from the Himalayan range in the to the tip of the extreme south, and from the western seaboard of India to In- dia's frontiers in the east. In cities, ancient or modern, in villages, in the plains, in the hills, in the forests, in desert oases-one meets the artisans, shaping metal with fire and hammerbeat into a myriad forms: one hears the throbbing of the still-beating heart of an age-old industry.
