I am happy to learn that proceedings of the National Seminar held in the Department of Zoology are being published in form of a book entitled "Modern Trends in Entomological Researches in India".
Entomology is the Science of Insects and is of interest to all as the insects has much economic and medical importance. The basic aim of such academic ventures to understand the physiology, biochemistry, control and breeding of economically and harmful insects.
I sincerely hope that this book will achieve its objectives.
This proceeding is the outcome of the National Symposium on the Modern trends in Entomological researches in India, organized by the Department of Zoology DR. H.S.Gour University, Sagar. Although many papers were presented in the symposium it was not possible to publish all of them therefore only some of them are selected for publication in the present book.
Entomology is the science of insects. This is a subject which is really of interest to every body. Take the case of ordinary housefly, honeybee, locusts, malarial mosquitoes, silk moth and numerous other insects which are deeply involved in our every day life. Insect comprise 70% of the known species of all kind of animals. About seven lakh species of insects have been described, but it is doubtful whether the number represents even one fifth of those existing today.
Among living insects the greatest size is found in individuals of the following groups in coleopteran Megasoma elephas which attains a length upto 120 mm, phasmida pharnacia may exceed 200mm, hemipteren Belostoma grande attains a length of 115 mm, lepidoptera Erebus measures upto 280 mm and Attacus atlas 240 mm. Among the smallest insects coleopteran Ptiliidae don't exceed a length of 0.25 mm. Some insects are smaller than the largest protozoa and others are smaller than the smallest vertebrate.
Insects are said to have appeared in the world long before human beings did. Insects probably arose in the Devonian period (45 million years ago) or earlier but good fossils were first seen in the rocks of Pennsylvanian (25 million years) age. They may have been derived from Myriapods, or they may have come directly from crustacean progenitors.
Today the number of insect species is about three times more than all other animal species put together. The breeding rate of insect is too high. A single pair of ordinary moth would cover the entire dry surface of the earth within a year if all survived.
There are about more than 500 species of insect pest in India which in some part or other have been doing serious damage to agricultural crops Other aspects of great concern is the development of insect strain resistant to insecticides. Developing plant varieties which possess natural resistant against insects is another important problem.
Different aspects of insect taxonomy distribution and control, protein and lipid metabolism, reproductive physiology and its endocrine control and insect immunity, insect control by plant products, insect ageing etc. were discussed in the symposium. I know that the paper which are being published don't present the complete modern trends in entomological researches in India. Nevertheless I hope that the articles published will draw the attention of young readers towards the problems related to entomology.
In the linalization of the proceedings of the symposium to this final shape many individuals have rendered invaluable assistance. The list is long hence I acknowledge with gratitude all the help received from individuals particularly Dr. Ganesh Shankar Giri, Prof. R.S. Saini and Prof. D.P. Gupta for their constant encouragement and support. I thank all the participants of the symposium and the contributors. The financial assistance received for arranging symposium and for publication of the proceeding from the University Grants Commission is greatly acknowledged. Lastly I thank Dr. Radhey Shyam Shukla, Pratibha Prakashan for executing the publishing work satisfactorily.
