Foreword
Visitor Studies in museums is an important subject for the teacher and pupils of Museology Department of any Institute. Equally it is important for all museum officers. There are various categories of museum visitors. Dr. Venugopal Bhargaviamma, the Registrar of the National Museum Institute (NMI), has made a detailed study on the subject. This study is the culmination of his work in various museums in India as well as the result of a few projects taken up by him through the Department of Museology of this Institute. He was assisted by a few students of the Department of Museology for these projects. Museology is essentially an applied science. It involves both theoretical and practical studies. The present book will be highly useful to the museum officers. If the suggestions in the book can be implemented it will be good to museums. But due to both financial and administrative hurdles, a majority of museums may find it difficult to implement. I can assure that the National Museum, which houses the National Museum Institute, will certainly take these suggestions seriously and try to make the Museum visitor-friendly. I am happy to see an immediate result of the visitor studies undertaken by the NMI. The exhibition entitled ""Ehasas: Senses and Images"" put up by the students of Museology of the NMI specifically meant for the disabled visitors, is inspired by the two projects on museum visitors (Project Museum, Accessibility and Disabled; and Project Museum Visitors) coordinated by Dr. Venugopal and involving students of Museology of the NMI. It is for the first time that the National Museum/NMI has opened an exhibition meant for the disabled visitors. A few months earlier, Dr. Venugopal organized a workshop on Museums and Disabled visitors, which was inaugurated by me. I appreciate his efforts for strongly fighting for visitor-advocacy and for making museums visitor-oriented. I congratulate this young museologist for his initiative to produce such a solid work within a short period for the benefit of all concerned who have real concern for museums.

Preface
My entry to the museum field is accidental. While completing my PhD in ornithology at the Calicut University, I saw an advertisement in Newspaper about a course in Curatorship by the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) at New Delhi. As a naturalist, I had been active with the Kerala Natural History Society (KNHS) with a team of dedicated naturalist involved in saving the Silent Valley forests in Kerala. We had plans to start a small Natural History Museum in Calicut. I was about to complete my PhD as well. So, I thought it was good to visit New Delhi and attend the interview, I was selected and 1 underwent 10 months curatorial training course at the NMNH. After completing the course 1 could not get a job, because the curatorial course was not a university course. Even at the NMNH itself the course was not recognized for job. Meanwhile 1 qualified the National Eligibility Test (NET) which was introduced for the first time by the University Grants Commission (UGC), went back to Calicut University, and completed my PhD thesis. Later 1 applied for a job of Educational Assistant through Employment Exchange and was selected at the NMNH. After joining the Museum, I felt I was wasting my time. I was a good researcher, but my job was not at all connected with research. Very few of the staff at the NMNH had research experience. In fact the NMNH did not have any research agenda at all. The main objective of the Museum was environmental education through the means of educational activities and exhibition activities. I was asked to guide visitors. My grasp of Hindi did not help me at all. I had plenty of time at my disposal in the galleries. I saw different types of people visiting the Museum and I observed them. My research in ornithology became useful. For my PhD I observed birds in the field. At the Museum I began to apply the techniques in ornithology to the field of museology. The observation techniques of field ornithology was modified to observe visitors. Binoculars were replaced by sharp eyes. Birds were replaced by visitors. Thus began my foray into the study of museum visitors.

Acknowledgement
This book chronicles my work on museum visitors spanning a period of 15 years, My work in the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) located at New Delhi as well as its two Regional Museums of Natural History at Mysore (South India) and Bhopal (Central India) inspired me to work with different types of visitors in India. Dr S M Nair, the then Director of the NMNH, inspired me to enter the field of Museums. He gave me and my colleagues exposure to what was happening to museums and museology both in India and outside. The various staff members of the NMNH who inspired my work on museums include Mr S K Saraswat, Director of NMNH, Professor Asif Naqvi, Chairman, Department of Museology at Aligarh Muslim University and Dr DP Singh, Education Officer of NMNH. Among the museologists from whom I got inspiration are Dr John Falk and Dr Mrs Lynn Dierking. I was also fortunate to meet three pioneers in the field of museum visitor studies: Dr J. Brunner, Dr Roger Loomis and Dr George Hein at the International Conferences organized by ICOM-CECA (International Council of Museum's Committee for Education and Cultural Action) at Barcelona, Rio de Janeiro and Calcutta. I owe an everlasting friendship with and inspiration from Mr GS Rautela, the Chairperson of ICOM-CECA. I had the fortune of working with him as an Executive Board member of ICOM-CECA during 1998-2001. My work at the Department of Museum Studies, Leicester University, UK helped me to broaden my ideas as I had classmates from many countries, from whom I got details of visitors at their museums. The Department provided me with a vast collection of literature, not found anywhere else. I owe my thanks to my teachers, especially Geoff Stansfield and Eilean Hooper-Greenhill. At Leicester I could interact with many of the leading British Experts on museum visitors, notable among them Dr Paulette McManus. Dr Amareshwar Galla, the Chairperson of ICOM-ASPAC (ICOM's Asia Pacific Organization) helped me to orient my work towards multi-cultural audience. I am also inspired by the writings of Dr Saroj Ghose, the only Asian to reach the position of president of ICOM, and who has single-handedly brought education to the forefront of museum activities in India. Dr RD Choudhury, the Vice-chancellor of the National Museum Institute (Deemed University), as well as the Director General of the National Museum, allowed me to continue with my work on museum visitors, and I gratefully acknowledge his help.
