Book Description

Introduction

I have great pleasure in presenting this brochure to the scholars interested in Indological studies, which contains the texts or summariess of my lectures on different subjects bearing upon Indi's contibution to human progress. These lectures were delivered by me at different times and under different auspecies at Dharwar in Mysore State and at Poona in Maharashtra State. As a prelude to the lectures given here, a short sketch of my life is added mainly to introduce to the public, particularly to the students of Ancient Indian Culture with special reference to Karnataka, the various research papers and work written by me during the last 45 years or more of me research career, This was thought proper and useful to the students of Indology-Karnatology, as they pertain to various branches, viz Archaeology, Epigraphy, Numismatics, Art and Architecture, Literature (Kannada and Sanskrit), Religion and Philosophy, Folklore, History etc. The First part of the sketch deals with my life and researches as Director of Kannada Research Institute, and as the Chief Editor of the Karnatak Historical Research Society, Dharwar, in which capacity, I have had an opportunity to explore the ancient cultural sites of Karnataka connecting the missing links in the pre-history of Karanatk and to discover several important new materials for the clarification of the history and culture of Karnataka. The second part gives the list of my research paper and works which number more than 150 with a brief summary of their contents.

The following synopsis of the discoveries and their contribution to the advancement of knowledge would, I hope, acquaint the reader at a glance with their importance. At a time when collection, research and study of basic materials were practically unknown in North-Karnataka, I had the good fortune of throwing my lot in that branch of knowledge which had least enticement and attraction of money and power, the two main urges of a distinguished university scholar, which determine the nature of career he would adopt for his life. After Bruce Foote of the Geological Survey of the Government of India, the study of pre-history and Archaeology of the Deccan and South India had not received its due attention from the scholars. I started my work in North Karnataka with the exploration of cultural sites which resulted in the discovery of sequences of prehistoric cultures from the Palaeolithic to the age of metals. This furnished the missing links in the efforts of man on the side of Karnataka. The discovery of a unique sacrificial vessel called the Ukhapatra is also worth mentioning in this Note.

In Epigraphy, many important records were brought to light, such as, Vadagoam-Madhavapur Brahmi Prakrit inscription, the Badami rock inscription of Pulekesin I, and many new royal families were unearthed from oblivion, such as the Bhojas, Mauryas, early Rashtrakutas, Akkalkot Silaharas, etc.

In the literary field, I collected several rare unpublished Kannada and Sanskrit Mss. Works and prepared their transcripts. The Virupaksha Vasanatotsava Champu, a historical Sanskrit Champu of the 14th cent A. D., was published. Similarly, in Kannda, the Madan-Tilaka of Chandraraja, Kavijihvabandhana of Isvara Kavi, Airavata ascribed to Kumaravyasa were also published with critical introductions.

In Art and Architecture, the memoir on the Gandharvas and Kinnaras in Indian Iconography is an important study throwing light on the spiritual and mythological traits of the demi-gods and their import in Indian temple architecture.

Ancient centres of Karnataka sculptural art were selected and the studies on their Art remains were published for the first time; see for example, the Historical and Art remains of Pattadakal, Badami and Aihole. The Jain Art and Icnography were studied from the remains of Bhatkal, Haduvalli and Kaikini etc. in North Kanara which yielded a treasure of jain bronzes and sculptures.

These archaeological remain and Inscriptions, Bronzes and Sculptures as well the collection of Mss. Works and Historical documents formed a unique neuclus of the Karnataka Museum and Mss. Library which are indispensable to the students of ancient Indian Culture. Studies on the rare ancient Karnatak coins were also publies by me from time to time. Publication of Inscriptions volumes I, II, III part I and folk-song and paper Document, described in the lists in part II are mine of sources for the cultural history of Karnatak.
