Preface
Many Sanskrit poets have composed works on Jawaharlal Nehru during the last 80 years in different genres like Mahakavyas, Khandakavyas, Gadyakavyas, Gitikavyas, Stotrakavyas, Dramas, and so on. A sample survey of some of them have been attempted in this book and I do hope that the book would be of some relevance when the nation is celebrating 125th Birthday of Jawaharlal Nehru.
I am highly grateful to Rashtreeya Shikshana Samithi Trust and all the trustees for making this publication possible.
I am indebted to my principal Dr. S.N.Srimathi for encouraging me in all my academic pursuits.
I am beholden to my father Dr.S.Ramaswamy, Fellow of the Silliman College Yale University for constant guidance in all my academic activities. He has also permitted me to incorporate his article entitled The Presence of Nehru's Personality in Kannada Poetry which he had written during the centenary celebrations of Nehru.
I thank Sri. P.S. Venkatesh Babu of Omkar Offset Printers and his staff for the neat get up of the book.
Introduction
"My life-time is not ending so soon", said Nehruji and an unkind destiny wrote the epilogue to the epic story of his life within a week. He was truly a citizen of the world who had made the idea of one-world and world-peace a living reality and his demise evoked global tributes.
The celebrated son of a celebrated father, this student of Harrow and Cambridge moved with the times and lived in the forefront for full fifty years. He saw life at many points and that too at close quarters. In the early years of his political career he moved freely in the villages of the United Provinces with the zeal of a missionary in the scorching heat of an unkind Indian summer discarding creature comforts and identifying himself completely with their interests. He achieved a niche in the hearts of millions and millions of his countrymen who loved and adored him as veritable God on earth and their affection has endured even after their hero's death. He inspired them to be up and doing by his speeches and by his bubbling enthusiasm and their abiding love inspired him, too, to dedicate himself to their service.
In mind he was ever youthful and yet he was rich in the wisdom of ages. As a freedom-fighter he established a saga in heroism by his matchless courage and disciplined iron will. He stood firm and unflinching for his principles and yet he made few enemies because of his unique gift of princely courtesy which was admired and appreciated all over the world.
The fiery revolutionary mellowed into a world statesman when he became the first Prime Minister of India. He cherished no ill-will against the British who had imprisoned him several times during their regime. He became their best friend. He retained India in the Commonwealth. As a matter of fact he is the father of the new concept of the Commonwealth.
Gandhiji is the Father of the Nation but Nehru is the foster-father of India who preserved and stabilised the hard won freedom. He gave it economic substance.
He was a prince among men and yet he hugged the poor, the down-trodden and the lowly to his bosom. He was a gentle perfect knight who entertained great reverence for man. That made him a democrat though by birth and intellect he happened to be an aristocrat.
He was respected equally both in Communist and Capitalist countries as the architect of non alignment and his opinions were eagerly sought by both camps in world-crises.
His love of children was like Christ's and they loved him throughout the world as their beloved 'Chachha'.
