History is ever growing subject of manifold dimensions. Its perspectives are very wide. Its horizons are enlarging. It is an area of studies to cultivate vision and study. At any rate it cannot be confined to chronicling of events.
The department of History and Culture of the Gujarat Vidya-pith organised a National Seminar on "The Philosophy of History in the Context of New Developments in Social Sciences' in the first week of October 1985 with the assistance of the University Grants Commission.
The purpose of this seminar was to make a critical apprisal of the impact of social sciences on History and vice-versa. It was an exercise in a deep view of their inter-relations. The discussions in the seminar proved to be very thought provoking in identifying some aspects of Philosophy of History that are of crucial relevance to Social Sciences. This seminar also emphasised the need for reconciling the methodological approach of social sciences, with the philosophical postulates of History and for determining advances in thoughts about history in relation to contemporary society. An aggregate view of human experience in the totality of time and space needs correct perspectives.
The papers presented in the Seminar, published in this Volume, unfold innumerable vistas which have a bearing on development of Social Sciences as well.
There is a great dearth of critical writings on this newly emerging relationship between both these multi-dimensional areas of studies.
Publication of this volume as an outcome of this seminar is a modest effort to fulfill this need.
All the scholars who came all the way travelling from far and wide and attended the Seminar deserve our foremost thanks particularly for their very painstaking papers and active participation.
The teachers of the Department Prof. Rasesh Jamindar, Prof. Mehta, Shri Chandrakant Patel, Dr. Pankaj Desai, Bindu Joshi, and the students, worked with great harmony and understanding. I thank all of them for their active co-operation. I also thank UGC for its support.
I hope researchers both of History and Social Sciences will welcome this publication.
