Book Description
About the Book
The essays included in this book provide highly critical and creative analysis of some of the basic problems of normative and meta ethics in a pleasantly readable language. They can be enjoyably and profitably read by technical philosophers as well as interested laymen. Professor Prasad writes on ethical issues as seminal, conceptual aspects of moral and philosophical issues, and not as issues arising out of some regional, Indian or non-Indian instances of moral thinking. Even ethical issues, generally discussed as rooted in classical Indian thinking, have been discussed by him as basic ones of moral philosophizing, and thereby he raises the status of some classical Indian views to a level at which their conceptual, general or non-regional, role becomes crystal clear. His writings try to bridge the gulf wrongly created by some others between Indian and Western moral theorizing. His views and analyses presented in this volume are free of any religious, political or social bias and prejudice, and are bold and authentic expressions which should be taken for their face value.

About the Author
Professor Rajendra Prasad, is a Lifetime Achievement Awardee of Government of India through Indian Council of Philosophical Research (ICPR). He retired from Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, where he was a senior professor of philosophy and head of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences. He has been a national fellow of ICPR and of Centre of Studies in Civilizations (CSC), and earlier a United States' government fellow, Rockefeller Foundation fellow, among many other coveted fellowships. He was a general president of Indian Philosophical Congress, Indian Philosophical Association and Akhila Bharatiya Darshan Parishad, and twice a sectional president of World Philosophy Congress in Moscow and Turky. He has published nine books and more than 100 original research papers in English and fifty in Hindi. He is even now actively engaged in philosophical research. His education was completed in the University of Michigan where he studied under the guidance of professors William Frankena, Charles Stevenson, Arthur Burks and William Alston, and was awarded the degree of PhD. He was given the grade "Excellent" on both of his written dissertation and oral examination, the highest grade of the University of Michigan.

Preface
THE essays collected and published in this volume are in fact my research papers published over the last few years, in various learned and reputed journals of philosophy. Only Chapters 5, 16 and 17 are recently written pieces. I have reread all the previously published ones contained herein and have done in each one of them whatever modifications, updation or retouching I considered necessary. However, the position I originally held in them has remained basically unchanged. In each one of the essays, an attempt has been made to critically re-evaluate some basic ethical themes or issues. I hope the study of even a few of these essays would train the reader's inquisitive mind to think afresh not only on the problems discussed therein but also on any ethical problem, he chooses to work on. And, he can, of course, begin with any one of them, since understanding and assimilating the content of none of them depend on a previous study of any other relevant philosophical material. I have been receiving, for quite some time, frequent requests from senior philosophers, research scholars, students and other interested non-philosophers for offprints of quite a few of these essays. I have not been able to serve them all, as I should have, or wanted to. The offprints got exhausted within only a few years of their publication. And, it soon became difficult for me to locate in my personal library the issues of journals in which the needed ones had appeared, sometimes, even for my own use. Therefore, I decided to get a selected set of these essays published in one volume.
