Book Description
About the Book
Chola Emperor Parthiban dreams of a day when his people will attain independence from the Pallavas. But when he dies on the battlefield, it falls to his son Vikramanan to realize this dream. Packed with suspense, intrigue, revenge and romance, Parthiban Kanavu is a pacy historical novel in which valour and integrity triumph over evil, and lovers separated by dynastic affiliations overcome obstacles to be united in matrimony. Written in simple and elegant prose, the novel is an important milestone in Kalki's illustrious literary career, offering tantalizing perspectives not just of his literary style but also his unequivocal views on politics and war and their impact on society. His characters never conform to the binaries of good and bad, instead they portray the various shades of grey and the ambiguities that encapsulate what it means to be human. 'Nandini Vijayaraghavan's translation skills are manifest in this work, as is her passion for storytelling. The sharp, engaging and steady narrative pace of the original is well preserved.

About the Author
Kalki Krishnamurthy (1899-1954) is among the most renowned Tamil writers. He was a novelist, journalist and music critic. This polymath, who also participated in India's independence movement, was a recipient of India's highest literary honour, the Sahitya Akademi Award, which he received for his social novel Alai Osai (The Sound of Waves). His writings include over 120 short stories, ten novellas, five novels, three historical romances, editorial and political writings and hundreds of film and music reviews.

Acknowledgements
History enthusiasts owe a debt of gratitude to the (late) Kalki R. Krishnamurthy. Indians who were exposed to a Delhi-centric interpretation of history through school texts became aware of Chola, Pallava and, to a limited extent, of Sinhala and Pandya histories thanks to Kalki's meticulous research and engaging narration. The Government of Tamil Nadu nationalized the works of certain Tamil authors, including Kalki. This gave multiple publishers the opportunity to print his bestselling novels. Over time, certain discrepancies in the chapter titles, character names and locations crept in. My translation is based on the novel as published by Pavai Publications (August 2009) and www.projectmadurai.org. My friends and mentors Mrs Rajam Anand and Mr Narayan Anand edited this book and translated the poetry. Veteran artist, Shri S. Gopalan aka Gopulu, illustrated an edition of Parthiban Kanavu. The illustrations in this translation are reproductions of his work. I consider myself blessed to have met the then nonagenarian Gopulu barely four months before his demise in April 2015. He graciously permitted me to use his illustrations in Parthiban's Dream and my other forthcoming translation of 'Washingtonil Thirumanam' (The Washington Wedding). This work is dedicated to the (late) Shri P.S. Ranganathan, whose nom de plumes include 'Kadugu' (Tamil for mustard seed) and 'Agasthiyan". A fine humourist, thinker and aesthete, PSR mama, as he was fondly known, loved life and the beauties contained within it. In addition to his literary endeavours, he was a scholar of repute. PSR mama and his wife and muse, Kamala mami, published an edition of the Nalayira Divya Prabandham, a first millennium Sri Vaishnava text, to great acclaim from pandits and laymen alike. His admiration for Kalki and Kalki's works manifested along with his polymathy, as seen in his invention of new fonts for Tamil and naming them after Kalki's female characters. Ponni, Kundavi and Vanathi are some of the Tamil fonts he invented. PSR mama was a great source of support and affection in my efforts to understand and translate Kalki.
