MAHARŞI AGASTYA The primordial Sage Agastya, or Agathiyar in Tamil is averred in the oldest Vedic scriptures, the Vedas, Upaniṣads and many historical epics and Purāņas. Sage Agastya was born to Mitra-Varuna deities and the celestial nymph Urvaši. In southern Tamil traditions. Agastya is regarded as the great father of the original Tamil language, to whom was revealed the divine Tamil language by Lord Siva in person. He is the compiler of the first Tamil grammar, called Agattiyam and wrote several revelations on medicinal science such as Ayurveda and Siddha. He is revered as the chief Siddhar (perfected sage, replete with mystical wisdom) of the eighteen great Siddhars, to whom the great Siddhar lineage is accredited.
The incredible glory of divine Sage Agastya is narrated by Lord Sri Rama in Välmiki Ramayana, who met the Sage in South India during his forest exile. Sri Rama extols Maharsi Agastya as the one accomplishing tasks that even Gods deem impossible, who inhabits the South of the earth to balance the spiritual energies of the North. where resides Lord Siva and the might of Mt.
