Education is universally recognized as the foundation of social progress, national development, and individual growth. At the heart of every effective educational system lies a well-managed school. Schools are not merely centers of instruction; they are dynamic social institutions that shape values, attitudes, competencies, and citizenship. In an era marked by rapid social change, technological advancement, and increasing expectations from educational institutions, the role of effective school management has become more complex, demanding, and significant than ever before. Principles and Practices of School Management has been written with the objective of providing a comprehensive understanding of the theoretical foundations and practical dimensions of managing schools in a systematic, democratic, and learner-centered manner. The book seeks to bridge the gap between educational theory and administrative practice by presenting school management as a purposeful, human-oriented, and goal-directed process. Traditionally, school management was often viewed as a routine administrative function concerned mainly with rules, regulations, and supervision. However, contemporary perspectives emphasize that school management is a multifaceted process involving leadership, planning, organization, coordination, decision-making, and evaluation. It is deeply connected with instructional quality, student well-being, teacher motivation, community participation, and institutional accountability. This book reflects this broader and more holistic understanding of school management. The primary aim of this book is to equip prospective and in-service school administrators, teachers, educational planners, and students of education with essential knowledge, skills, and insights required for effective school functioning. It recognizes that successful schools are built not only on sound policies and structures, but also on visionary leadership, collaborative culture, ethical governance, and responsible use of resources. The opening section of the book introduces the concept of school management by explaining its meaning, nature, scope, and significance in the educational context. It highlights management as a dynamic and continuous process that integrates human and material resources to achieve educational goals. Emphasis is placed on democratic values, professional leadership, and the social responsibility of schools in shaping future citizens. Subsequent chapters deal with organizational structure and governance, underscoring the importance of clear roles, authority, accountability, and participatory decision-making. Schools function effectively when organizational frameworks are transparent, flexible, and aligned with educational objectives. Good governance ensures that policies are implemented fairly, resources are utilized judiciously, and stakeholders are actively involved in the life of the institution. Strategic planning and visionary leadership form another crucial focus of this book. In a rapidly changing educational environment, schools must move beyond short-term problem-solving to long-term planning grounded in a clear vision and mission. Visionary school leaders inspire collective effort, promote innovation, and guide institutions toward continuous improvement. This section emphasizes leadership as a moral and professional responsibility rather than merely a positional authority. Curriculum development and instructional leadership are treated as central responsibilities of school management. The quality of education largely depends on how effectively curriculum goals are translated into classroom practices. School leaders play a vital role in ensuring curriculum relevance, instructional effectiveness, teacher professional development, and learner-centered pedagogy. The book highlights the importance of aligning curriculum planning with learners' needs, societal expectations, and national educational goals.
