This spontaneous talent attained maturity with training in the J.N.Manipur Dance Academy,Imphal followed by special training under ojha Thiyam Tarunkumar Singh and choreography training under ojha R.K.Singhajit Singh.

In 1993 he joined Sangeet Bhavan, Visva Bharati University and has been training students from all over the world. While training foreign students he felt the need of a book written in English. True, there are no books in English where the bols that are taught in class can be found. This vacum for this kind book will be filled up by this book written by Y. Hemanta Kumar.Rhythms of Manipuri Dance is most welcome.

Introduction

Dancing and playing drum is my passion from my childhood. Still I remember the day when I asked my mother to give me an empty tin can of Glaxo. She brought one from the store room and I tied a piece of thread on the edge of both side of the can and kept it hanging on my shoulder. I played it like a drum and danced Pung Cholom, observing my enthusiasm in music and dance my grandfather bought me a small Pung (Manipuri Drum) from the Nupa Market (males market in Imphal ). I was very happy and played the drum all the time. When I was eight years old my grandpa arranged the performance of "Gostha Leela, Sansenba" at our home and invited Ojha Partho Singh a well-known guru from Singjamei to teach. I played the role of Madhumangol and my niece Indubala performed the role of Krishna. After this Gostha Leela performance my grandpa sent me to Ojha Ch. Kulabidhu Singh and Ojha

Y. Sekho Singh for initial traditional training in Manipuri drum and then to Guru Yumlembam Nandikishor Singh for professional training.
