Book Description
Introduction

UMASHANKAR JOSHI was born in 1911 in Bamna, a small village in North Gujarat, the region which was under a native state at the beginning of the twentieth century. Known for its hilly landscape and natural beauty, it was marked by poverty and backwardness at that time. It was inhabited largely by tribals and dalits. A small number of brahmans who resided there engaged in farming and were also economically weak and poorly educated. Age-old social customs and the rigid caste system, however, prevailed in the region of which the worst victims were women and dalits. Umashankar grew up in this milieu. The fairs and festivals of the region and the social life of villagers as well as the hills and forests and rivers formed his imagination and found expression in his early writings.

Umashankar left his village for further studies and arrived in Ahmedabad where he got involved in the freedom struggle.
