Our society used to call them by various names like mahara, jankha etc. On the other hand doctor had given them a name 'gay'. If he is a man, then gay and if a woman, then lesbian. It will take a time in the recognition of lesbian and gay after that the behavior of society started among them. People used to make faces after they know about a person being a gay. Our society becomes unable to accept such relation. According to this society how can a man marry and love another man and how can a girl marry and love another girl.
