Educational research plays a significant role in understanding, analysing, and improving the various dimensions of education. Teaching, learning, curriculum, assessment, teacher preparation, educational administration, institutional development, and educational policy all involve questions that require systematic inquiry. Experience and professional judgement are important in education, but they are not always sufficient for arriving at dependable conclusions. Research provides an organised and evidence-based way of identifying educational problems, examining their causes, collecting relevant information, analysing findings, and developing meaningful conclusions. The present book, Research in Education: General Perspective, has been prepared to introduce readers to the fundamental concepts, processes, and practices of educational research in a clear and systematic manner. The book is intended especially for students of education, teacher educators, teachers, research scholars, and beginning researchers who wish to develop a sound understanding of research methodology. Its purpose is not limited to explaining technical terminology. It also seeks to show how the different components of a research study are related to one another and how a research idea gradually develops into a well-planned investigation. The language of the book has therefore been kept academic yet accessible, so that readers can understand important methodological concepts without unnecessary complexity. Educational research is concerned with a wide range of issues. Researchers may study classroom interaction, teaching methods, learner achievement, motivation, curriculum effectiveness, assessment practices, teacher behaviour, school organisation, educational technology, inclusion.
