Preface
Civil Society Network, a non-governmental organization registered under Societies Registration Act, 1861, is dedicated to social causes and acts as an advocacy group by engaging with members of civil society for taking up social issues like education, health, sanitation and rights of consumers. It conducts research towards these ends and holds seminars, conferences and discussion groups for creating awareness among people towards social issues.
The research project titled "A Study of Madaris and Urdu-Medium Schools in North India: An Examination and Evaluation of their Role in Career-Building and Socio-Economic Upliftment of Muslim Community through Education" has been conducted by the Civil Society Network team on behalf of Institute of Objective Studies, New Delhi. Its main objective is to find first, what is the state of madrasa education and Urdu-medium schools and second, how have they historically accomplished this task especially helping the students to acquire a gainful employment for themselves.
The specific objectives of this study were:
1) To focus on financial resources of madaris in Delhi and parts of north India;
2) To study the curriculum and the historical evolution of madaris;
3) To map the socio-economic profile of madaris and Urdu-medium schools children;
4) To collect employment data of alumni of madaris and Urdu-medium schools;
5) To understand the impact of various government schemes on the functioning of madaris;
6 To find out the career and success-graph of alumni of madrasa and Urdu-medium schools.
The study has been conducted keeping in mind above objectives, and findings and recommendations have been recorded. We hope that findings and data collected by our research team will be useful for all the stakeholders in the madrasa system and help in arriving at useful policy formulations.
We are thankful to Institute of Objective Studies (IOS) and its Chairman, Dr. Mohammad Manzoor Alam, for assigning us the research project and providing financial support. We look forward for a more fruitful relationship with IOS for taking up researches on social and public issues.
