The author has had a uniformly meritorious academic record securing a first class in each of the public examinations of the High School and Intermediate Board and University. She passed the M.A. History Examination of Gorakhpur University in 1977 securing a first class first and was awarded the Junior Research Fellowship of the University Grants Commission in the year 1977-1978 to work on the Doctoral Thesis on which this volume is based.
In order to evaluate a civilization and assess its achievements, its essence and spirit have to be understood. Women form an indivisible part of that essence and spirit. Hence, their status, position, role and contribution assume importance.
This work reveals the efforts which have been made to present a clear picture of the role played by women in Medieval Indian Politics. Indian History abounds with women enlightened, cultured educated possessing shrewd political accumen and wielding power. They dominated or tried to dominate every situation. Their influence may have varied but never did they become insignificant.
This work is an attempt to highlight the career and achievements of some of the prominent women of the Sultanate and Mughal age. The period of my study falls between the two most powerful women Razia and Nur Jahan who had exercised tremendous influence on the political life of Medieval India.
This work is based on the Persian chronicles and accounts of the foreign travelers. Both contemporary and non-contemporary accounts of historians have been taken into consideration. Major secondary works both in English and Hindi alongwith articles in various journals have been utilized.
