Foreword

The importance of the study of Rtusambara carefully, lies in the basic position that it brings out into clear relief, certain features of Kalidasa's personality and literary outlook, which stood out, more and more prominently in his later works. The child is, indeed, the father of the man.

2. The serious study of Rtusamhara commenced during the current century. It began with a stress on the appreciation of Rtusambara as a unique collection of Sanskrit lyrical poetry. It is noteworthy that the stimulus for this transition was supplied by no less than India's foremost poet viz. Rabindranath Tagore. He asked Ranjit Pandit (whose father, S. P. Pandit, had earlier translated into English some other works of Kalidasa for the famous Bombay Sanskrit Series), to translate Ṛtusambara into English, during a halt at the charming residence of the Pandit family on the Khali Hill, near Almora, close to the Kumauni Himalayan border, in the course of a lovely spring season. Ranjit diligently complied with this direction.
