The Directorate of Archaeology and Museums has taken up excavation, conservation and research at the great mediaeval capital city Hampi (Vijayanagara) under Hampi Resurrection Project. Several publications have been brought out under this project. In addition to this the Directorate has published four volumes of "Vijayanagara Inscriptions" in Karnataka and "Vijayanagara Temples in Karnataka", edited and authored by other scholars. Now the Directorate feels happy to place before the scholars "Scuptural Art of Hampi" by Dr. K.M. Suresh. This volume contains a discussion on vide range of religious sculptures at the capital. I congratulate Dr. K.M. Suresh for this commendable work.
Central Food Technological Research Institute is of a great help to this Directorate in bringing out the publications. Dr. V. Prakash, Director, CFTRI, graciously accepted the printing of this book. Shri K.A. Ranganath and Shri S. Umesh have printed this volume attractively in a short time. My grateful thanks are due to all of them.
Since the inception of the much favoured and patronised research project, "Resurrection of Hampi" in the year 1982, by the Government of Karnataka, the Department of Archaeology and Museums has been conscientiously and consistently striving hard, sparing no efforts, to unfold further and further the history of Vijayanagara and its multifarious but bewildering achievements. Their operations involve large scale excavations, renovation and restoration of the exposed structures and other monuments and publication of books on varied aspects of research done on Vijayanagara studies, besides their own series of "Progress Reports", all of them throwing flood of new light on the study of Vijayanagara Empire, a welcome and record performance indeed.
To that lengthy list of valuable publications, here is the latest addition, a monograph, much awaited, on the subject "The Sculptural Art of Hampi" by Dr. K.M. Suresh, formerly of the Archaeological Survey of India and presently serving in the Kannada University, Hampi, as Director of that University Museum. This work represents the first comprehensive and exhaustive treatment of the subject.
I am pleased to place the present volume in the hands of the research scholars and others interested in the subject.
I wish that the Department brings out more and more such publications and continues to earn applauses from all quarters.
