About The Book

The Vaisnab poets wrote a number of poems or songs which were divine and as well as earthly. They express a devotee's deep aspiration for truth and the ultimate reality. At the same time, these songs are related to human life and human love. R. N. Tagore appreciated these songs highly and the modern readers can enjoy these poems as they remain eternally relevant to human existence. These songs are basically religious but essentially human. Dinubandhu Ghosh having certain poetical sensitivity has tried to translate these Bengali songs into English. It is really difficult to translate them as they are rich in poetical flavour and bright in poetical sensibility. And translation has its own limitations.

About the Author

Dinabandhu Ghosh lives at Burdwan and teaches at Bankura Sammilani College as an Associate Professor of English. He has written a number of critical books which reveal his power of judgment and love for literature. He has translated many Bengali poems into English. It is hoped that the sensitive readers can enjoy and appreciate these translations.

Preface

These are extra-ordinary poems written by a number of poets who were poets as well as devotees. They sought God in their life but did not ignore the mortal world, human love. They really believed that mortal love is the ladder to the divine love. The relation between lover and beloved is as good as the relation between God and devotee. In other words, human love is but the replica of divine love. Both are necessary to understand the truth of creation.

These are simple poems which lack artificiality and unnecessary decoration. These poems are very rich in thought and emotion. The poets in those days could not imagine that poems can be ambiguous, obscure and unintelligible. One can easily comprehend these poems or songs and this comprehension is not shallow or cheap. A reader should possess emotional intensity to perfectly taste these poems. He should be spiritual and at the same time human. During many years, these poems or songs filled the hearts of the people, they were certainly moved by emotional appeal of these poems. These poems are virtually linked with the air and water of Bengal.

Rabindranath Tagore was highly impressed by the poems written by the Vaisnab poets. Tagore was particularly impressed by the human elements of these poems. In one of his poems, he has revealed his reaction and has made it a point that these poems are more earthly and less divine. A worman's adoration, her deep attachment and emotional intensity are beautifully expressed in these poems. Radha behaves like a mortal lover and her passions and emotions really strike readers. She is a real lover full of emotional integrity and she does not waver in her love. In love, she is uncompromising. She is the mortal as well as divine. Many of these poems are written in the perspective of Radha's love and her mental state. The poets voice forth the deep desire and pure emotion of Radha who stands out as the incarnation of female love. Radha is the eternal woman and she is unique in world literature. She has given birth to millions of songs and poem. Indians really adore Radha though her love has been illegal. It is really interesting to find that a whole nation has glorified Radha through ages and generations. Her tainted love becomes divine because of the purity of emotion and intensity of aspiration. In a number of poems and songs, Radha's deep desire has been lyrically expressed.
