Let noble thoughts come to us from all directions.
- VEDIC PRAYER
Life on earth is a life of dependence. Directly or indirectly, we all depend on each other. We breathe air, drink water, play on the earth, eat food grown by farmers, live with love in the company of family and friends, study in schools under the guidance of teachers, and above all, we are hungry for love from near and dear ones, including our pets. We even depend on tiny insects like bees and butterflies to pollinate flowers to give us food like fruits and vegetables. And dogs, jackals, crows, and vultures actively clean our environment.
We depend on nature, society, and institutions. Hence, when we recognize mutual dependence, we should do our best to reciprocate goodness. We must be careful: we should help each other by living natural lives of sharing and caring.
Life is for living and giving, for receiving and giving back. Living for others is a simple and beautiful law of life. We receive oxygen and provide carbon dioxide. In return, trees and plants use carbon dioxide and give us oxygen. That is our life. We should always protect and preserve as many living beings as possible and do minimum damage to others.
A simple example illustrates our roles and responsibilities. We eat delicious food. It is produced by farmers and those who cook food with love and care like mothers or other family members. What do we do in return? How do we give back to those who serve us in an invisible manner? The simple approach is thanksgiving and prayer for them along with a loving and grateful attitude.
We always want to receive smiles and sweet or soothing words from others, but are we really living lives of giving and serving? Lives of peace, joy, and happiness are possible when we shower services to those in need with a smile. Since we must live and depend on others, we should have open hearts, ready hands, and active feet to serve and love others unconditionally. This is the way to lead a divine life.
