Book Description

Preface

With the grace of the Almighty-SELF, in 1997 we could publish 3 books of around 90 pages each, viz. Vishnu Sahasranama, Gita Saar and Lalita Sahasranama. We are now more confident and determined to continue our project of publishing similar books. The next one in this series is this book: Srimad Bhagavata.

We have summarised the vedic scripture of Srimad Bhagavata as contained in the Gita Press Gorakhpur publication which is presented in 18,000 Sanskrit verses with Hindi/English translation in over 2000 pages and in 2 volumes. Not only does this contain the episodes of the various incarnations of the 'SELF' and select prayers of Gopi Geet, Yugal Geet, Gajendra Prayer, and Prayer of Dhruva out of over 75 prayers in this Gorakhpur publication, but also the summarised versions of Vivek Chudamani the initiator of knowledge, to grasp and recap the principal vedic scriptures like this Srimad Bhagavata, Upanishads, Gita, Brahma Sutra, etc. along with certain related references of these scriptures.

This book, at the outset, refers to the situation prevalent in the country with the negativities of all sorts in all spheres of activities, especially in fields such as education, agriculture, industry, society, governments and the judiciary.

We have brought out the substance of this scripture in summary episodes for our guidance in leading an ethical life, not looking upon these episodes as mythological description of the Lord's incarnations. This is further emphasised by including select episodes from the lives of great men of our times such as Mahatma Gandhi, Swami Vivekananda, Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi, Swami Ekanath, etc. for particularly substantiating the fact that the only way for peace and prosperity in our lives is through strict adherence to the ethics as given in these episodes.

In addition, we have also tried to evidence the veracity of this scripture and its detailed description with the help of 'press cuttings' briefing the meteorological periodicity of millions and billions of years through the latest advancement of technology. We have endeavoured also to substantiate the unanimity of religions very vividly by including appropriate quotations from the 'sacred space' column of the newspaper, The Times of India. This is with a view that this scripture is understood to be without any reservations at all, for one and all, desirous of leading a life with peace and tranquillity for the good of all, besides oneself.

In this English version an attempt is made to bring out the essence of the original scripture in Sanskrit. However, should the erudite reader notice any lapse or deficiency in this English rendering, we shall feel greatly and gratefully obliged to learn of such lapse so that we can publish appropriate correction in later editions.

Introduction

India, like other Asian countries, is transforming itself very gradually but quite noticeably into an industrial nation. This process has however brought about changes in the ethical values such as honesty, sincerity and integrity of its people. As a result, people have forgotten the ancient vedic culture of Sanatan Dharma which advocates tolerance, uniform growth of all castes and creeds without exploitation of any one, or any thing including ecology and the environment.

No doubt, we have in our country everything well constituted through agencies like the judiciary, the parliament and the executive ministers supported by administrative and defense services with the President heading it all in a manner befitting the world's largest democracy. This was all done very meticulously at the time when India attained independence from British rule and became the Republic of India in 1948.

The focus at that time was on getting freedom from tyranny. Then we had all the qualities of a good society because we had the legacy of the ancient culture reflected in our leaders and the public at large. Then we cherished ethical values and aspired for an all round growth of the nation without sacrificing moral standards.

But unfortunately we could not sustain those morals and ethics subsequently because of the rapid development and the multiple demands that arose when India became independent. The administering of such a vast country with too many demands, perhaps corrupted the amateur administrators of the country. They tended to go astray from the path of the natural code of conduct of our country because of lack of experience and maturity in Due to the ill effects of centuries old feudal rule and the rapid decline in moral values during the 50 years since independence, we are now at the bottom level of ethics in all sectors. There are a good number of spiritual institutions in the country whose credentials for the upliftment of society are dubious. They have proved to be of no moral value, judged on standards laid down in our vedic culture.

We have thus lost our faith and confidence in this vedic culture and have drawn almost a conclusion that our religion, though it is Sanathan Dharma is a collection of mythological stories. On the contrary, Sanathan Dharma embodies all religious principles in it for a good society with all round prosperity through the vedic tenets of Varnashrama, i.e. the four sects according to the duties performed, viz. Brahman, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Sudra, as well as four Ashramas, viz. Bramacharyashrama, Gruhasthashrama, Vrudhashrama and Vanprasthashrama in chronological length and in sequence of age 25-50-75-100 years of life, respectively (the life expectancy of around 100 years in the earlier period of saints and seers has now declined to 60 years). This is taken merely by the so called elite and educated society as an assemblage of mythological stories of vedic literature, and not as realities that we experience day in and day out in our every day life. This is a totally wrong concept, which has resulted in the state of affairs, as narrated below.
