It is generally said that marriages are made in heaven. However, the parents of the prospective girls and boys for marriage are still human and they have their own aspirations to get their children married. They are eager to find out as to when their daughters and sons will get married and to know the kind of person they will get for marriage. Number of persons were coming to the Author write this Book. Here, the Author has discussed the Stree Jataka in respect of their longevity, health, wealth, education, profession, appearance, physique, character, family, relationships, friends etc. Similar aspects of the husband also have been discussed with reference to the Kalathra Sthana (or 7th House) of the female horoscope. The type of marriage the native will have whether it will be love-marriage, registered marriage, inter-cast or inter-religion marriage or conventional arranged marriage have also been discussed.
One of the main things on which the horoscope matching for marriages is based on birth Nakshatra of the female and male. Hence, an Exhaustive separate Chapter has been devoted to the Nakshatras as this will give an insight into personality of the desired individuals.
Another important factor used for matching horoscopes is the assessment of Doshas or afflictions due to malefic planets. A separate Chapter has been devoted to the discussion of Kalathra Dosha or affliction to the married partner. In another chapter, effects of Lagna and Planets on the 7th house have been explained.

I hope this book will be of immense help in understanding and propagating the concepts of marriage mataching and will add to the usefulness of the literature on marital affairs.

1.1 Historical Background:
The knowledge of Astrology in India is very ancient and dates back to before 5000 B.C. One of the great exponents of Astrology is the sage Parasara whose works in Astrology are well known. He is father of the sage Vedavyasa, who has codified the Vedas and also written the great epic Maha Bharatha and other Puranas. He also lived during the period of Maha Bharatha in Dwapara Yuga. Astrology is as old as the Vedas themselves and is one of the six vedangas. These existed much before the Kali Yuga started. It is already more than 5000 years since Kali Yuga has begun and from this one can understand how ancient Astrology is.
Matching horoscope for marriage has been in practice from time immemorial. For the purposes of understanding the horoscopes, one must know about the structure of a horoscope. The horoscope represents the zodiac. Inside the zodiac are shown Sun, the planets, the constellations, and the Lagna cusp, are shown for a particular instant of time, for instance, the time of birth of an individual. This Zodiac is divided into twelve equal parts of 30 each. Each of these is known as a sign or rasi, the first one starting from Mesha (Aries). In succession they are : Mesha (Aries), Rishabha (Taurus), Mithuna (Gemini), Karkataka (Cancer), Simha (Leo), Kanya (virgo), Tula (Libra), Vrischika (Scorpio), Dhau (Sagitarius), Makara (Capricorn), Kumbha (Aquarius) and Meena (Pisces). Their corresponding English names are given in brackets.
1.3 Sayana and Nirayana System
For the purposes of computation of the position of planets and that of the Ascendant or Lagna, the rising point of ecliptic –the path of the Sun or the zodiac –above the horizon, at the desired instant of time, two types of zodiacs are considered, one moving and the other fixed. Movement of the zodiac is reckoned from the retrograde movement of the First Point of Aries, the amount of angular distance moved by the First Point of Aries from its zero position is known as the Precession of Equinox or Ayanamsa. Due to the rotation of the Earth about its polar axis and the bulge in its spherical shape, the equinoctial line moves backward. It has been assessed by various Indian Astronomers and almanac makers that the rate at which the backward movement takes place varies from 54” to 50” 2286 per year. Suryasiddantha assumes that to be 54” per year. V.B. Ketkar observed this to vary from 50.”8267 to 50.” 5279 with an average value 50” .6773. and the year when the First Point of Aries coincided with the virtual zero point of the fixed zodiac was 305. 14 AD. Another almanac maker N C Lahiri observes that it coincided in the year 285. 2222 A.D. that is on March 22 of that year and calculates the Rate 50.”2564 per tropical year and gives an equation for further calculation from 1st January 1900 to be Where t is in tropical year of length 365.242216 days.
An eminent almanac maker L Narayana Rao, also the preceptor of the author has arrived at a value 50”.2286 for the annual rate. Slightly different values for precession has been used by other eminent astrologer B. V. Raman and Krishnamoorthy. However, the Western astro-logers do their computations in the moving zodiac, which includes the ayanamsa-the distance moved by the First Point of Aries from its zero point. The longitudes so obtained are called tropical longitudes or sayana longitudes. The Indian astrologers do their calculations in the fixed zodiac system or nirayana system. That is, the ayanamsa is subtracted from those obtained in sayana system.
In the solar system, the Earth and the other planets Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn are revolving around the Sun.
However, for an observer on the Earth it seems the Sun and the other planets revolve round the Earth. The planets Mercury and Venus have their orbits inside that of the Earth, and hence they are called Inferior Planets. The others are called Superior Planets, as their orbits are outside that of the Earth. Rahu and Kethu of the Hindu Astrology are called the shadow planets. They represent respectively, the ascending node and the descending node of the Moon’s orbit while intersecting the ecliptic.
The elliptic orbit of each planet has got its own apse line formed by joining the Aphelion and Perihelion and the Apse line has a forward motion with the exception that of the Venus.
The two points where the orbit of a planet when projected on the celestial sphere cuts the ecliptic are called the Nodes. As in the case of lunar orbit these nodes also have a backward motion.
The planets of different orbits have their own plane and each of them is inclined to the ecliptic by a small angle, for example, that for the Moon’s orbit is 5 degree 9’.
Each of the planets has different velocity for going round the Sun. of these Saturn is the slowest. It takes 29 ½, years, next comes Jupiter, which takes 12 year for one revolution, Mars takes 687 days, then the Sun takes 365 .25 days, Mercury takes 88 days, Venus takes 225 days, and the Moon takes 27.3 days. These planets, therefore, can be arranged as per their velocity as follows: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury and the Moon… Further, as mentioned earlier, Rahu and Kethu are respectively the ascending and the descending nodes of the lunar orbit. These nodes have retrograde movement around the ecliptic with a period of about 18 years.
In addition, there are 27 constellations spanning the zodiac. These constellations are also known as stars or nakshatras. Each of the 12 Rasis of the Zodiac contains 2 ¼ of stars, thereby, each star occupying 13 degree 20’ of a Rasi. One quarter or a pada of a star occupies 3 degree 20’. Each of the Planets, as well as the nodes Rahu and Kethu will be positioned in one of these constellations or the stars during the daily motion.

11. Poorva (Poorvphalguini)
12. Uttara (uthraphalguni)
17. Anusham (Anuradha)
18. Jyeshta (Dhnishta)
The stars in the first column are called Janmam, the second column stars are called Anjanmam and those in the third column are known as Thrijanmam stars, if the natal star is Aswini. For any other star being the birth star, three such columns can be formed with successive stars.
It may be noted that in the above list, the stars Makam, Pooram, Uttiram, Anusham, Sravishta, Poorattathi, and Uttirattathi are also respectively known as Magha, Poorvaphalguni, Uttaraphalguni, Anuradha, Danishta, Poorva Bhadra and Uttara Bhadra. It is well known that the planets occupying the various Rasis in the zodiac emit their rays which inturn affect the individuals and other living beings in different ways, depending on their position with respect to a given instant of time according to their birth.
The position of the planets and the Ascendant or Lagna at a desired moment of time in different Rasis represents a Horoscope. A horoscope is essential for predicting the good and bad of a living being according to the influence exerted by various planets occupying different rasis or houses and stars.
1.4 Significance of the 12 Rasis: Aries – Mesham
This is the first of the twelve Rasis of the zodiac spanning from o to 30°. It is in nature rough and rude; represented by the head of a ram. Physical features of a person born in this sign has middle stature, lean and muscular body which is never stout or thick, fairly long neck, has sturdy whiskers and bushy eyebrows with fairly good and developed bones. The caste is kshatriya; the qualities it represents are: courage, strength, determination, rough behaviour, indifference, does not like to be subordinated, hard working, perseverance. It represents: fire, the direction East, in colour blood red, in nature tamasik. It is barren, in height short, by terrain hilly with rocks and precious stone and minerals, pastoral land, place for thieves, stable. As body part it represents the head. Among disabled, it represents the blind. It causes wounds inflicted by weapon and fall; and diseases due to heat, are strong in night as it is backward rising (prishtodaya). Lord of this Rasi is Mars; This Rasi is divided into three Drekanas of 10 degrees each. The first Drekana is ruled by Mars, represents a male with weapons; the second Drekana is ruled by Sun, represents a being with a face of a horse; the third Drekana is ruled by Jupiter, represents a cruel man holding weapon. It is a movable (chara) Rasi. In this Rasi Sun is exalted, Saturn is debilitated, Jupiter friendly, Venus, Moon and Mercury are equals; Rahu and Kethu are inimical. Sun and Jupiter are Yogakarakas and bestows benefits to the native. Saturn, Venus, and Mercury are marakas - the death inflicting planets. However, the second house lord Venus does not inflict death, whereas, Saturn and Mercury are capable of inflicting death or difficulties equivalent to death. Substances ruled by this Rasi are: textile, wool, wheat, resin, barley, gold. The stars Aswini, Bharani, Krithika 1st quarter or pada are in this Rasi.
Taurus – Rishabam
This is the second Rasi' of the zodiac lying between 30° and 60° and is a fixed sign (sthira rasi). It is represented by a bull. Physical features are: middle stature with generally plump body and broad fore- head, thick and stout neck, dark hair and swarthy complexion. It is a female rasi, white in colour, a plain with sand. Its lord is Venus and is a place of wealth. The qualities it represents are: soft but non-quarrelsome, self centered and materialistic, persons who want to benefit from other's wonk and wealth, good in craft and fine arts, short. Among disabled represents the deaf, among the five elements it represents Earth, the direction South, the caste Vaisya; represents rajasik nature, as this also is backward rising it is strong in night. It represents the face and the neck of the Kalapurusha.
The first Drekana is feminine, ruled by Venus, the second is ruled by Mercury and is masculine in nature, representing a quadruped and the third Dekana is ruled by Saturn and is feminine in nature.
Moon is exalted in this rasi and is its moolathikona house. Rahu is debilitated here and Sun is inimical, Mars is equal, Mercury and Saturn are friends. Saturn confers Rajayoga. Moon, Jupiter and Venus are malifics. Moon, Jupiter, Venus and Mercury are marakas. Mercury being second house lord will not kill; however, other planets will do harm.
It represents table land, farms, stable, forests, place where cattle are kept, banks, treasury etc.
The items ruled by this rasi are: Textiles, flowers, wheat, rice, barley, buffaloes, and bullocks.
The stars in this rasi are: Krithika 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarters or padas, Rohini, Mrigasirsham 1st and 2nd quarters or padas.
This is the third rasi of the zodiac covering 60° to 90°, ruled by Mercury and has the appearance of twins joined together, one male and the other female. Physical features of a person born in this sign are: tall and well formed body, usually above average height, long slender hands, active temperament, lively expression, quick sight, nimble walk and clear speech. It is a common sign (ubhaya rasi). It represents dry and green lands, gambling houses, pleasure haunts such as parks and gardens, boats, hills, schools and libraries and places of learning. As parts of the body, it represents shoulders, arms, chest and breasts. Persons of this rasi are courageous, determined, hard working, having more brain power, high intelligence and highly creative, can achieve excellence in design, research and dance. They are adjustable and have compassion and artistic. They is rajasik in nature. The lord of this rasi is Mercury and colour is green. It represents the element air and the direction West. Among disabled it represents the dumb. The substances ruled by this rasi are: autumn creepers and cotton.
The first Drekana is ruled by Mercury and is masculine, the second Drekana is ruled by Venus and is feminine. The ruler of the third Drekana is Saturn and is masculine. No-planets are either exalted or debilitated. Planets other than Mercury are its friends. Saturn and Venus are yogakarakas for this rasi .This rasi is head rising (sirshodaya) and hence strong during the day and night. Sun, Jupiter and Mars are malefic to this rasi. Moon, though a maraka, will not kill as he owns the second house. Saturn and Jupiter being lords of ninth and the tenth house respectively can bestow benefits.
The stars in this rasi are Mrigasirsham 3rd and 4th quarters, Ardra, Punarvasu 3 quarters.
Cancer – Kataka
This rasi is the fourth of the zodiac spreading from 90 to 120 degree and its lord is Moon. It has the shape of a cancer. A person born in this sign has the physical features: stout stature, thin build, frail constitution in the childhood but strong in manhood, upper part of the body longer than the lower, round face with a timid look, pale dull complexion. Often dwarfs are born under this sign. It is a movable sign. Represents the element water and the direction North. It has the colour of white as a pearl. It represents cool places with water, like rivers, ponds, ocean, lakes etc. The persons of this rasi are highly emotional, selfish, imaginative, intelligent, changeable and headstrong and will not care for others and selfish. This is a feminine rasi as part of the body it represents the heart.
The first Drekana is feminine and its lord is Moon. The second Drekana ruled by Mars is masculine in nature and the third Drekana is ruled by Jupiter and is masculine in character.
Jupiter is exalted and Mars is debilitated. Sun is equal. Mercury, Saturn, Venus. Rahu and Kethu are inimical. Jupiter and Mars are benefics, Mars himself is capable of conferring Rajayoga; however, Mars and Jupiter joined together will bestow greater benefits. Sun being the owner of the second house will not inflict death; however, Mercury, Venus and Saturn are marakas capable of inflicting death or troubles equal to death. It represents tamasik nature Among disabled the lame, and Brahmin caste, among other items the plantains, fruits, bulbs and cocoanuts. The stars in this rasi are Punarvasu 4th quarter, Pushyam and Aslesha.
This is the fifth of the Rasis of the zodiac lying between 120° and 150°. Jet has the shape of a lion. Physical features are: full stature with well developed bones and broad shoulders, commanding appearance with big round or oval head, luxuriant hair, eyebrows having imposing, royal and dignified appearance, ruddy complexion. Represents Kshatriya caste. And the direction East. It is a male and a fixed sign. People of this Rasi is courageous, have leadership qualities, cannot be subjocated, they want victory in every aspect and are proud. They are satwik in nature. Dry and barren Rasi. Even when hard work is put in, there may not be as much result.
The first Drekana is masculine and its lord is Sun, the second Drekana is feminine and its lord is Jupiter, the third Drekana is masculine with Mars as its lord. No planet attains exaltation or debilitation in this Rasi. This rasi is ruled by Sun. Moon, Mars and Jupiter are friends, Saturn, Venus, Rahu and Ketu are enemies. Among the disabled, it represents the blind. Since it is forward rising, it is strong during the day. The places it represents are forests, deserts, rocky places, forts, fire places. The element it represents is fire. Colour is yellow or yellowish red or brown. As body part it represents the stomach. The commodities represented by this sign are husk, grains, juices, hides and skins, Jaggery and sugar. The stars in this rasi are Makham, Pooram or Poorvaphalguni and Uttiram or Uttiraphalguni Ist pada.
This is the sixth Rasi of the zodiac covering 150 to 180°. This has the shape of a beautiful virgin lady. Physical features of persons born under this sign are; slender body, oftentimes middle height, dark hair and eyes, curved eyebrows with much hair, generally thin and shrill voice, quick, active walk, often appear younger than his age. This represents the element Earth and the direction south; by caste Vysya. The lord of this Rasi is Mercury and is a dual sign. Among the disabled it represents the deaf. People ofthis Rasi are soft, kind, but vacillating. They are worried about their personal security and they are materialistic. This is a dry and barren Rasi, hence it requires hard work and much effort. They are thrifty and therefore think twice before spending. They are tamasik in nature.
The first Drekana is female and is ruled by Mercury, the second is a male ruled by Saturn, and the third is a female ruled by; Venus. In this Rasi Mercury is exalted and Venus is debilitated. The Moon, Mars and Jupiter are enemies, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu are friends. The places represented by this Rasi are play grounds, libraries, book stalls, printing press and educational institutions. Mercury and Venus are yogakarakas. Moon, Mars and Jupiter are marakas. Venus, though second house, lord will not inflict death. It represents hip as body part and colour green. The commodities represented by this Rasi are flax, horse gram, and wheat. Green gram. The stars in this rasi are Uttiram or Uttiraphalguni 2nd, 3rd and 4th padas, Hastham, Chittirai 1st and 2nd padas.
Libra – Thulam
This is the seventh Rasi of the zodiac, lying between 180 degree and 210 degree It has the shape of a balance which represents the balance of justice, which weighs the good and the bad. Physical features of persons born under this sign are: tall slender well-proportioned strong body beautiful and graceful outlook, fine skin and gleaming eyes, baldness in the occipital region in the middle age, physical beauty. It stands for the element air and the direction West. Among the disabled it represents the dumb. It has the colour of silver white and brightness of diamond and tamasik in nature. The people of this Rasi have lot of mental power, they are creative, interested in fine arts. They are determined and successful achievers. However, they are materialistic. They are kind and helpful to people and will be just in their actions. This is a movable sign ruled by Venus, Saturn is exalted and the Sun is debilitated here. Saturn is the sole yogakaraka, who is very beneficial, Moon and Mars are equals, Jupiter is an enemy and the other planets Mercury, Rahu and Ketu are friends.
The first Drekana is male and is ruled by Venus; the second Drekana is female owned by Saturn and the third Drekana is male ruled by Mercury. The places for this rasi are bed rooms, beautifully decorated rooms with mirrors and airy, the caste is Sudra. For this rasi, Saturn, Mercury and Venus are benefics. Sun, Mars and Jupiter are malifics. Combination of Moon and Mercury bestows Rajayoga. Sun and Jupiter are marakas. Mars being lord of second house will not inflict death. As body part it represents groins. The commodities it represents are black grams, barley, wheat and mustard the stars in this rasi are Chittirai 3rd and 4th padas, Swathi, Visakam, 1st , 2nd, and 3rd padas.
Scorpio – Vrischikam
This is the eighth Rasi of the zodiac extending from 210 degree to 240 degree and has the shape of a Scorpion. Physical features of persons born in this sign are: middle stature with well proportioned body and limbs, robust health failing only of persons own neglect of hygiene, broad face and short, thick and curling hair. This is a female Rasi .represents the element water and the direction North; in caste, the Brahmin. The colour it represents is red and is a fixed sign. The people of this Rasi is very active, confident, creative and of fighting quality. They will fight for their rights. They are very capable. They are intelligent and cunning. This is a watery sign. In this Rasi the Moon is debilitated and is ruled by Mars. Represents rajasik nature. Sun is a friend; Venus and Mercury are equals; Ketu is exalted; Saturn is an enemy.
The first Drekana is feminine and is ruled by Mars, the second is a male and is ruled by Jupiter, the third is a female and is ruled by the Moon. Sun, Moon and Jupiter are benefics, bringing happiness and benefits; Mars, Mercury and Venus are malifics; Sun and Moon are yogakarakas. Mars, Mercury and Venus are marakas; Jupiter and Saturn will not inflict death; but, Mercury and others will kill. The places represented by this Rasi are the canals, marshy lands, and wet lands, bathing places and ponds. As body parts this represents sex organ. The commodities it represents are sugar cane, water creepers, irrigated produces, metals and wool. The stars in this rasi are Visakam 4th pada, Anusham or Anuradha and Jyeshta.
Sagittarius – Dhanus
This is the ninth Rasi of the zodiac lying between 240 and 270 degree ruled by Jupiter. It has the shape of a man aiming an arrow from a bow. Persons of this sign have physical features: a well-developed and handsome figure, with fairly large and high forehead, usually tall, having long and big nose, clear eyes, light brown hair, ruddy complexion, large expressive eyes, graceful and handsome figure. It is a male sign and a dual sign. It represents fire and the direction East. It is satwik in name. The people of this Rasi are strong, enthusiastic and determined. They are just and dharmic in name. Also they have give and take nature.
In this Rasi no planet is inimical and neither exalted nor debilitated. Jupiter's moolathrikona Rasi; Sun, Mars, Rahu, Ketu, Venus are friend's. Other planets are equal.
The first Drekana is male and is ruled by Jupiter; the second is a female and ruled by Mars; and the third is a male ruled by the Sun.
Sun and Mars are benefics; Venus is malefic; Sun and Mercury are yogakarakas; combination of Sun and Mercury bring Rajayoga. Venus and Mercury are marakas; Moon and Saturn will not inflict death. Other marakas will inflict death.
The places represented by this Rasi are stable of horses, armory, pooja room, places where cash is kept. As body parts it represents the thighs. Among the disabled, the blind. The commodities represented by this Rasi are horses, salt, textiles, corn and roots. The stars in this rasi are Moolam, Poorvashada and Uttirashada 1st pada.
Capricorn – Makaram
It is the tenth Rasi of the zodiac spanning from 270° to 3000 and ruled by Saturn. This has a female face and body of a fish. Physical features of persons born under this sign are: a weak slender body and constitution improving with age, thin face and beard, dark coarse hair. It is a female Rasi and a movable sign. it is the twelfth and the last Rasi of the zodiac spreading from 330 to 360 degree. It has the shape of twin-fish, Persons born under this sign have physical features: a short but full and plump figure with considerably small head and face, round shoulders" dull and listless eyes sometimes large and striking, thick stature, corpulence in middle age, light and silky hair. It is a dual sign; it represents the direction north, is satwik in nature. It has the shape of two fishes with head changed in direction. It is a female Rasi and represents the element water. Imagination is the cause for success of this people and they are very selfish. The Lord is Jupiter. People of this Rasi can easily succeed in getting whatever they desire. They are honest and quick. The Rasi is biped and is ruled by Jupiter.

1.5.Planets and their Disposition
As mentioned earlier, in Indian Astrology there are nine planets. Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Kethu. Of these, Rahu is the ascending node and Kethu is the descending node on the path of Moon while intersecting ecliptic, the path of the Sun. In the zodiac, Sun and Moon are respectively considered as the King and the Queen while Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are respectively Prince, Minister, Commander-in-Chief, Preceptor and Servants. Ownership, Moolathrikona and exaltation signs of these planets are shown in Table 1.1. These planets are having their debilitation points exactly at 180 degree from their exaltation points.
