About the Author

Hailing from Thrissur, the cultural capital of the tiny Indian state of Kerala, Meera Vineeth Kodakadath, is one among the emerging writers in Indian English poetry. Vivid imageries in her poems that portray delicate yet profound realms of existence make her works stand out in the crowd.

Meera was born on 16th June 1988 in Wadakkanchery of Talappilly Taluk, as the daughter of P Premanchandran Unni and Kodakadath Latha Devi. She is the granddaughter of the noted Malayalam writer and critic late Prof. D Padmanabhan Unni.

Meera showed a keen interest in arts and art forms since childhood, the very passion brought her much name and fame as a student. She was an active presence in the school youth festivals and has also secured the position of Kalathilakam, a distinguished recognition for exceptionally talented students.

After completing her school education, Meera pursued her higher studies in English literature. Securing her masters in English Language and Literature from Saint Berchmans College, Changanassery, she served as the lecturer of English Literature for two years in All Saints College, Thiruvananthapuram.

She currently stays at Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala with her husband Vineeth Venugopal, who is an IT professional and son Adithyanarayanan. Her brother, Rammohan KP is a mechanical engineer working and pursuing his Ph. D in Sweden.

Preface

As the famous words of E E Cummings, "To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best, night and day to make you everybody else means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight, and never stop fighting' has been my personal experience throughout my writings. Poetry, to me, is a fight with oneself. To be more precise, a constant seeking to understand the polarities of our outer and inner self.

While I dance, I am in an imaginative world of different characters which made it possible for me to express feelings without making others realize that I am too going through the same. Poetry, on the other hand, was a helping hand to give voice to those hidden expressions.

The poems of this collection try to render musicality and permanence to certain aspects of all our lives. It is perhaps Nature, Spirituality and a love of oneself that guides you the most in your trying times. Being a woman, I strongly believe that success comes only though deeply rooted convictions and unwavering love for all around us. All are unique and each one of them passes you by with a sweet or sour message. But down the memory lane, they are the ones who shaped you.

Let me thank all those who have supported me to make this humble work possible. Firstly, I would like to thank my parents, P Premachan- dran Unni and Kodakadath Latha Devi, to be very kind to me in understanding my potentials. My brother Rammohan KP, his readings and his wide knowledge gave me the confidence to pursue the same. It is a matter of huge blessing, especially for a woman, if she is gifted by a supportive and caring spouse. My husband Vineeth Venugopal often helped me carve my thoughts to words. Again, the innocent countenance of my son Adithyanarayanan is perhaps the one that triggered my work.

Foreword

An impetus urge to express is an inborn trait of perhaps everything in the universe, however the same is visible more in human beings for their very intellectual ability. While most of such expressions are considered superficial, poetry since time immemorial remains as the profound forms through which human beings expressed the deepest of their selves.

This was important for the poets themselves, and for the entire human race too, for these expressions speak of the times they lived. Through the history of poetry, we can trace the evolution of human life that is incessantly on a process of transformation. We see some pearls shining at the bottom of the river of life, in the poem of poetry that reflects the beauty and pain of the whole universe.

Meera Vineeth Kodakadath's debut volume of poetry Symphony of the Ocean is a classic example where we can find the meeting of 'the urge to expression' with its very outcome of bringing an account of the evolution of human psyche towards its future. One of the significant elements that we can notice here is that the poet successfully portrays various stages in women's lives through her works. A tender daughter who is amused of a magical world, an adolescent who tries to fantasize about her surroundings, a passionate lover who seeks the meaning of love in the platonic realms, a mother who personifies a complete woman -Meera brings all these imageries to life with her magical words.

Water is a universal symbol of the unconscious mind and is linked to the moon, femininity, and irrationality. Oceans are equated with chaos as they are boundless and ungovernable. The conscious mind is more closely linked to the lake or pond.
