The book 'Tagore's Gitanjali, Its Truth, Beauty and Significance and Influence on Malayalam Literature' by a well known poet and lyricist in Malayalam is a well studied dissertation on a great poem which won Nobel Prize in 1913. Gitanjali, the most widely read Tagore text in Malayalam had its impact on several poets. Jayakumar brilliantly analyzes the circumstances which led Rabindranath Tagore to write Gitanjali. This book remarkably explains the glory of Gitanjali by focusing on different aspects like manifestation of supreme power everywhere, the philosophical vision on human life and the eternal relationship of a soul. In the introduction, the author summarises the extraordinary life of Tagore with rich biographical details.
Gitanjali is an everlasting monument in world literature since it emanates the spiritual vision of the great Upanishads of India. Malayalam literature was always tuned to Tagore right from 1920's. There are nearly 21 translations of Gitanjali in Malayalam. The chapter on 'Tagore and Malayalam Literature' is an overview on the profound influence of Tagore on Malayalam literature.
Rabindranath Tagore is an unparalleled phenomenon. The variety of his literary creations, the genres he has handled, the range of artistic expressions, the breadth and depth of his ideas and the spectrum of activities he pioneered and the originality of ideas make Tagore a consummate artist with no peers, not only in Indian languages but also in world literature. His output has been prodigious; the corpus of his literary, musical and artistic creations enormous and the ease with which he switched genres incredible. He was at home with poetry, short story, novel, play, song, painting, education, rural reconstruction, public oration, and patriotic pursuits. A tireless traveler, Tagore visited almost all continents. Wherever he went, the poet left a lasting impression, with his messiah like appearance and the unique attire (he had personally designed) that blended with his philosophy and mysticism. In him, the age-old wisdom of Indian spirituality blended with the morning hue of modernity. The poet imbibed the essential truth of all religions and developed his own ideas of spiritual and social syncretism. In the smithy of his mind, he forged the idea of a new India; an awakened country that would value the oneness of humanity and look beyond the petty walls of race, creed and even nationality. Tagore synthesized the quintessential humanism of true religion and defied the conventional contradictions between grief and joy, life and death, enjoyment and renunciation, man and God and the like. Tagore was, at once connected to the ageless wisdom of India and concerned with the issues of his times. With his intense awareness of the past and the present, he was a great visionary who could foresee the emerging contours of history. Mahatma Gandhi's epithet of Tagore as the 'Great Sentinel' sums up the alacrity and awareness of the poet.
