FOREWORD

India is one of the few countries that have taken major lead towards establishing the Pharmacopoeial standards of its traditional medicines. For ensuring the manufacturing of the quality ASUSH drugs, the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 was amended in the year 1964 to bring within the range of its operations and rules there under. This has led necessary to work out the standards of Unani Drugs under Unani Pharmocopoeia of India (UP).

UPI is a legal document comprising of the standards for establishing the quality of preferred Unani drugs that are manufactured, distributed and sold by licensed drug manufacturers in India. This work is continuing with the addition of new monographs as on-going work of Pharmacopoeia Commission for Indian Medicine & Homoeopathy (PCIMSH).

The present UPI, P-1, Vol. VII comprises of 40 monographs of the most frequently used plant origin Unani drugs. The work carried out for this volume is of high scientific quality and will provide reference to various groups of stakeholders. The work compromised in this volume is accomplished at different premier Drug Standardization Units under Ministry of Ayush.

With these words, I place on record my appreciation for the efforts made by Prof. M.C. Sharma, Chairman, Scientific Advisory Board (SAB), PCIM&H, Prof. S.S. In order to maintain uniformity of standards for the Unani medicines produced by venous manufacturers in the country. Ministry of Ayush has already published six volumes of the Part- plant volume continuation to the task conferred to PCIM&H by the Ministry of Ayush yet another Volume VII of the Unani Pharmacopoeia of India containing 40 monographs has been compiled and approved for publication. The monographs are prepared on different part used of the plant including seeds, roots, leaves, heart wood gum stem bark Towers, etc. These plant parts are practice either as a stand alone or in combination with other standardized plant parts. The drugs selected for this volume like the earlier volumes are taken from the National Formulary of Unani Medicine.

Each monograph is titled with the classical/official name of the plant part with its synonyms in Arabic and or Persian along with other regional names. This is followed by description of the part(s) of the plant with illustrated macro, microscopic and powder characteristics, physico-chemical parameters, thin layer chromatography, heavy metal limits pesticidal residues, aflatoxins, etc. All the data has been presented scientifically in standardized.

Format the legal notices and general notices have been provided for pharmaceutical and regulatory purposes. The Appendices include details of the apparatus, reagents, chemicals solution tests, methods of preparation of samples for microscopic or chromatographic examination.

With this background, I am pleased to present the seventh volume of "Unani Pharmacopoeia of India (UPI), Part-I" published from Pharmacopoeia Commission for Indian Medicine & Homoeopathy (PCIM&H).
