Book Description
Preface

The 150th birth anniversary of Sri Saradadevi was celebrated all over the world in the year 2003-04. For an unknown village girl from a remote hamlet of the 19th century Bengal, to rise to such heights of spiritual eminence as to be called and worshipped by millions of people as the Holy Mother, is no less than a wonder of wonders, if not a miracle. But, truths are often stranger than fiction! And, this certainly zone.

This book is small. But, the inspiration that has prodded it is not small, but pure and noble. It contains a panoramic view of her life, a continuous unfolding of her character and culminates in her exhortation that rouses the deepest cord of universal love inherent in every human being.

True to the Hindu tradition of honouring great saints and divine incarnations, a hymn of 108 names has been added in the appendix.

Introduction

Whether India has produced many great women or great women have made India great, there is no gainsaying the fact that Saradadevi. The immaculate spouse of the immaculate godman, Ramakrsna, was great in her own right. As a daughter, as a sister, as a wife, as a mother and as a spiritual teacher, she has left an indelible mark on the history of not only Indian women, but also on that of the great women of the world. That an unlettered lady, born and brought up in the rural setting of the India of the nineteenth century could rise to the level of a goddess, adored by millions all over the world, speaks volumes of her greatness.

An earnest study of her life is as fascinating as it is educative, of the ancient Indian values that have shaped its womanhood.
